“Not that I know of.”
“Call and tell them to hurry over.” Jinx spins, lifting her leg again as she lays on her side, her meows sounding more distressful, and my heart skips. “And bring back something soft, please.”
He nods, rushing out of the room. I don’t want to hurt her, so I pull the bed away from the wall, and Lennox is back with large towels a few moments later.
“Just called them, and they are on their way here.”
“Okay.” Jinx hisses at me as I approach, only allowing Lennox to be near her.
“Come lay here.” Making a fluffy pile, he urges Jinx to settle on top, and she rests on her side again, staring at us while she makes more noise, still panting.
Lennox furrows his brows, sitting beside her while petting her head, and I take in his concerned expression, how much he truly loves this little cat. Only a few minutes pass, and Jinx is bearing down on her hind leg, her tail lifted while pushing—not long after comes a tiny kitten in a sack, and Jinx begins licking it clean.
“Ohh, Lex. She didn’t even look pregnant. How many kittens do you think she’s carrying?”
He shakes his head, breathing out a shaky breath while swiping away a tear from his cheek. “Fuck, I have no idea.”
That's adorable.
“Does this mean you’re a grandpa now?” I giggle, and he smirks at me, watching Jinx do her thing, the orange and black kitten already nuzzling into her stomach to feed only moments later.
More footsteps are coming up the stairs, and Sadie appears with Kylo close behind.
Her eyes instantly tear as she covers her mouth. “Aw, Jinx…”
I stand, helping her kneel, and let her and Lennox have their moment alone, walking next to Kylo, smiling just as wide. We keep a close eye on Jinx, and with an internet search, it says if she’s no longer panting or bearing down within the next hour, then she’s likely done with one kitten.
We converse for a while, and Sadie kisses her cat a few times before she and Kylo leave, feeling Jinx saying here would be best until Jax, the kitten, is old enough to be on his own.
It’s nearly sunset when Lennox and I settle on the couch, watching an action movie with the cats in the corner sleeping. Glancing up at him, focused on the screen, I kiss his stubbled jaw while lying on top of him, and he exhales, hugging me closer, utterly content.
TWENTY-FIVE
DO WITH ME AS YOU PLEASE
Evie’s not an early bird person, that’s one aspect I learned the last few weeks, and I’m cherishing every second of her gorgeous grumpy face as we drive down the highway on this fine Friday morning. She brings her ball cap down further while I glance at her every so often, then smiles when I hook my arm over her shoulder to kiss her temple. I’ve been planning this trip since the night she told me at Vivid, the one place she’s always wanted to go.
“Lex…why are we here?”
“I have a surprise for you.”
Her brow arches. “At the airport?”
I chuckle, parking into the long-term lot, then get out of the car to jog around and open her door. Holding my hand out, I wait for her to take it, and she does with a smirk. I grab the suitcase from the trunk, filled with new outfits and all the traveling essentials, with Sadie’s help. Evie stands by with her arms crossed and narrows her eyes.
“What are you up to?”
Draping my arm across her shoulder as we walk toward the building, I say, “What’s the one place you’ve always wanted to visit but never had the chance to?”
Her eyes gloss over, then she shifts to press her cheek into my chest with a tight hug. “No—you’re taking me to Italy?”
“Well, we never had a honeymoon.”
She giggles, taking hold of my face to place a few kisses on my lips. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Peaches.”
The last time we flew together, we nearly made the mile-high club. Officially, checking that one off my bucket list during our twelve-hour flight. I may have almost thrown my back out in that tiny space, but fuck did Evie’s tits look great bouncing in my face. Once we land, I can’t hold back my grin the farther we walk into the airport, and she halts her steps.
