She rolls her eyes, but her grin shows she’s anything but annoyed, which eases my nerves a bit.

I unlock the doors as we both get inside the car, then turn to face her when she’s settled. “Okay, what’s going on?”

“First, things first. Do you prefer to be called auntie or—”

“Sadie—shut your mouth!” My face scrunches as I place the back of my hand over mine. “No you’re not,” I cry, drawing her in for a hug, feeling her nod as she intakes a shaky breath.

“I am. Twenty-one weeks tomorrow, and we have an ultrasound appointment in the morning. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”

Backing away, I wipe my palms across my raw cheeks. “Wow, I’m so damn happy for you two, and expect me to completely spoil the hell out of this kid.”

As much as I am happy for them, my emotional intake is at an overwhelming high, and I’m reaching a breaking point that I’m trying to avoid.

“Wouldn’t expect any less from mymaid of honor….”

My eyes widen as I huff. “You’re killing me. What?”

“I know. Kylo asked me to marry him last night. Can you believe it? We haven’t made anything official yet, but—” She grins, unable to contain her excitement. “I don’t care about a ring. I just love him so much.”

As if I have more left to shed, my eyes well, automatically reaching for my bare left hand at the mention of marriage, and I mask the pain with a laugh, focusing on her smile, brushing a few strands of hair off her radiant cheeks because I love this woman. I’m so proud of what she’s overcome.

“You are glowing, my dear.”

Sadie tips her head to the side, seeing straight through me. “Evie, I have no business pressing you on what happened in Vegas, but I’m here if you ever need to talk.”

“I know.” I lower my head, waving off her concerns. “It’s just easier to ignore the situation right now.”

She sighs. “Lennox cares about you a lot. If this certain situation that arose in Vegas made you feel scared, it could mean, maybe, just maybe, you care about him, too.”

“Sadie…”

“He once told me,don’t let fear rule you.” Her hand cradles her little baby bump, which makes me smile. “And I’m glad I took his advice. Perhaps a thought to bear in mind?”

I let out a shaky breath, staring straight at Vivid as the moments between Lennox and me from the last five months rush in at once. Every tear, laugh, moan, already knowing everything she says to be true—the intimacy, to feel the desire, happiness, is what I need, so why am I depriving myself?

Start the car. Don’t let fear rule you.

“I know. Thank you.”

TWENTY-TWO

A MELODY

For five years, I’ve come to this cabin to see Kylo. I know the calm that comes upon entering, leaving a little less empty, but the contentment never lasts. Tonight, I take an alternate route, strolling along the pathway toward the guest house, taking my time to give myself a moment to retract, and when it doesn’t come, I step faster, my heart fluttering to see Lennox.

The door’s open, and I peek inside. “Lex?”

Every light’s off as I enter, the moonlight the only source. Sadie’s cat is lying on the back of the couch licking her paw, and I stroll by, rubbing her head and making my way toward the stairs. He should be home, or else he wouldn’t have cracked the door for Jinx. I slowly take each step and follow the wall to the lounging area on the left, but he’s not in there either. It’s probably not the best idea, but I check the next door at the end, his bedroom unoccupied, then enter the bathroom last, which is wide open.

Lennox has his eyes closed, lying in the bath with one arm behind his neck and both legs propped on either side of the tub. His moan goes straight to my core, and I grip the door frame, taking him in as he tilts his head back with each grunt while stroking his dick. The way his muscles flex as he takes his time makes my pussy throb, unable to contain the soft moan passing through my lips. He opens his eyes, stops his movements, and stares at me across the room.

“Don’t stop on my account,” I say, kicking off my shoes.

“What do you want from me, Peaches?” His blunt words make my stomach sink, and I want to break the wall I created.

Pulling my shirt over my bare breasts, I drop it beside me. “I came to apologize.”

Lennox takes in my nakedness, his lips parting. “What are you doing?”
