We stepped down from the stage. “I’ll keep an eye on the big guy,” Denton said. “I think you two could use a minute.”
“Thanks,” Cane said.
“Congratulations to the two of you,” Denton said. “This is the girl for you. This is the one God put on this earth for you. Not the other one.”
“Thank you, Denton,” I said and gave him a hug. “Thanks for keeping him safe until I could scoop him up. And of course, thanks for dragging him to Faux’s in the first place.”
“It was my pleasure.”
I grabbed his arm and gave it a good pinch. “And if you ever take him back there, I will personally remove the parts of your body you love the most.” I said with a perfect smile.
“Noted,” he said. “Come on, Benji. Let’s check out the bounce house.”
Cane took my hand and led me out of the ballroom and into a quiet hallway. Our mouths slammed together. My hands slid up his arms and to the back of his neck. Our tongues dueled. Passion erupted between us just as fast as it had a year ago. The spark had not faded. It had only grown brighter and stronger.
“I love you,” I breathed. “You take my breath away. Every time I see you, I get butterflies in my stomach. I love you more every day. I love our little family.”
“I hope our little family will keep growing” he said. “I love you. You have given me a new lease on life. I don’t know how long I would have let myself live in that limbo before you came along. You showed me it doesn’t take money to be happy. It doesn’t take success. It takes love.”
“So, about this marriage thing,” I teased. “Are we thinking long or short engagement?”
“I’ll marry you right now,” he said.
“Good to know because I’m thinking short. It’s not like we have a big family we have to invite. I want to marry you right away.”
“We’ll make it happen.”
“Why don’t we go get our son and go home?” I suggested. “I’m thinking some hot chocolate in front of the tree. We’ll watch Frosty and then put Benji to bed. And then, that’s when the real fun starts. Remember that little outfit you mentioned?”
His eyes widened. “Mrs. Claus?”
I nodded. “The little one.”
“I’ll get Benji,” he said. “You give the ticket to the valet.”
I laughed watching him practically run away. When we got home, I made the cocoa while Cane got Benji changed into his pajamas. I carried the tray into the living room with the tree lit up. “Who’s ready for cocoa and popcorn?” I asked.
Benji was snuggled under his favorite Minecraft blanket. Cane had put on his plaid pajama pants and a T-shirt. I couldn’t explain it, but whenever he wore the pajamas, I got so turned on. He looked hot in everything he wore, but the jammies were extra hot.
I settled down on one side with Cane on the other. Benji was snuggled between us. It was a picture-perfect Christmas. The tree looked a little different this year. Benji had made several ornaments, which were all hanging on the tree. I was hoping to fill the tree with ornaments from our kids. Our many, many kids.
I looked over at Cane. He was laughing at the show like a little boy. My heart felt full. This was the dream I never let myself have when I was a little girl.
Now I had it all.
