The doctor stepped into the room and gave them a wave.
“Jace, the doctor just got here. I need to let you go. Get some sleep, okay?”
“That’ll be pretty hard.”
“Try.” She laughed.
“I will. I’ll see you soon. Call me if you’re released before nine, and I’ll come get you.”
“I will. Bye.”
“Bye, doll.”
Maddie hung up her phone at the same time Kayla had.
“Good morning, ladies. I’m Doctor Martinez. How are you both feeling?” she asked.
Both Maddie and Kayla said they were good, so she continued.
“I’m going to pull the drape between your beds and speak to you individually.”
When she moved to pull the drape, Kayla spoke first.
“It’s unnecessary. I’m okay with you discussing everything in front of Maddie.”
Maddie nodded. “I feel the same. Kayla can hear everything. We’re best friends and roommates.”
Doctor Martinez nodded. “Okay then. We suspect you were given a date rape drug called Rohypnol. Are you familiar with it? The street name is called roofies.”
When both of them nodded, she continued, “While we don’t suspect either of you was sexually assaulted, we would like to do a drug panel to confirm what you ingested. By doing that, we need a urine sample. I believe Susan already told you to let us know if you need to use the restroom.”
“She did,” Maddie confirmed.
“Great. I realize this is a lot of information to take in and you’re likely confused, but we have counselors on hand if you’d like to speak with one.”
“I’m actually okay,” Maddie said.
Kayla nodded. “I am too. My boyfriend told me they caught the bastards who drugged us, and he confirmed we were alone the entire time. We know we weren’t sexually assaulted.”
Maddie nodded as well, since Jace had given her the same information.
“The police asked us to call them when you woke up, so they are headed this way now to take statements,” Doctor Martinez said. “When you came in, we took blood samples from both of you to confirm there weren’t any other drugs in your system. Those panels don’t test for Rohypnol, and they came back clean. Once the police get your statements and we get your drug panels back from the urine tests, we’ll be able to cut you loose after a bit of monitoring.”
Maddie and Kayla both thanked Doctor Martinez, who then left their room, letting them know to buzz the nurse’s station if they needed anything.
Kayla looked over at Maddie. “I’d say it’s time we pee in cups so we can get this show on the road. And perhaps we can have some waffles and ice cream when we get home.”
Maddie laughed and picked up her bed remote, hitting the call button for the nurse. “I think you’re right, and wedefinitelyneed waffles and ice cream.”

Jace sat outside the hospital,watching his clock. It was 8:55 a.m. He wouldnotbe late. Maddie had texted that they would be released soon, but it wouldn’t be before nine. He had already gone to his favorite coffee shop and got drinks for both Maddie and Kayla, along with a box of a dozen assorted pastries.
When 8:59 a.m. hit, he got out of his car with a holder of drinks balanced on the box of pastries and made his way toward the entrance to the hospital. At exactly nine a.m., he walked through the front doors and checked in.
His heart thundered as he walked down the hallway, following the directions the front desk gave him to Maddie and Kayla’s room. The door was open, but he knocked lightly on the door frame anyway before stepping inside.
