Chase laughed. “I can’t say I’m surprised. I bet he’ll come crawling back to you.”

Kailynn frowned. “Abi said that, too.”

He tilted his head as he watched her. Jealousy creeped its way up the back of his neck. Part of him wondered if she’d take Drew back given the opportunity, but no. She wouldn’t possibly do that. Would she?

“Would you?”

“Would I what?” Kailynn asked.

“Would you take him back?”

Kailynn lifted an eyebrow and stared at him like he had three heads.

“Is that a serious question?”

He wasn’t one to get insecure, but he hadn’t considered what would happen if Drew wanted her back. They had been together a long time, after all. He couldn’t imagine himself going back to Allison, even for the familiar comfort of someone, but not everyone was like him.

Kailynn crawled onto his lap and straddled him so they were eye-to-eye.

“I would never, under any circumstance, even if he and I were the last humans on this planet and it were up to us to procreate to save the human race, everbe with him again.”

This time, he lifted an eyebrow. “Wow. You’d even let humanity die out? That’s some serious shit right there.”

She laughed loudly and leaned forward, pressing her forehead to his. “That’s how serious I am about never considering taking him back. I would have to be insane.”

He pressed a kiss to her lips and tugged her closer to him. “I’m happy to hear that because I’m not ready to lose you.”

“I sure hope not,” she whispered.

Chase ran his hands up and down her back. A familiar zing shooting through his hand from the simple touch.

“My brother called me today.”

“Oh yeah? That’s exciting. You haven’t spoken to him in a long time, right?”

He nodded. “It’s been a few months.”

“Were you able to catch up?”

“Yes. Remember how I was telling you that my brother is one to take an idea and run with it?”

She nodded.

“Well, I made a comment aboutmaybecoming to visit for my mom’s sixtieth birthday,” he paused. “And now I’m going to visit during my mom’s sixtieth birthday.” He chuckled.

“That’s wonderful, Chase. I know you miss your family.”

“I do. But there’s more.”

“Okay…” she said, curiosity pouring from that one word.

“He wants me to bring you because apparently my mom already loves you. But that’s not surprising. I knew she would.”

She gave him a puzzled look. “But she’s never met me.”

He shrugged. “That’s my mom.”

She pulled a lip between her teeth and chewed on it as if deep in thought.
