For once, Kailynn could put the thoughts of the business aside for a bit and do something she enjoyed.
She hit play and shoved a handful of popcorn into her mouth just as the front door opened and Abi walked in.
“Oh, hey! You’re home,” Abi said.
Kailynn hit pause and set the popcorn down. “I am.”
Abi dropped her purse on the kitchen table and settled in a chair in the living room, folding her legs beneath her.
“How was last night?” She raised her eyebrows suggestively.
Kailynn laughed. “It was good.”
Abi stared at her and then put her hand in the air, waving it back and forth. “Oh, come on! You can’t leave it like that!”
“Well, I slept with him.”
“I knew it! That walk of shame this morning made it so obvious.”
Kailynn blushed deeply. “You didn’t even see me when I got home!”
“Maybe not, but I did see Chase.”
Kailynn hadn’t even realized Chase had run into Abi, but it made sense now. He looked a little flustered when she came back out of her room. Abi had said something to him. She shook her head.
Before Kailynn could respond, Abi spoke again. “So tell me what happened at the mediation.”
Kailynn welcomed the change of subject. She filled Abi in on everything that happened and a smile came to her face as she spoke about it. The amount of tension she had been holding in her shoulders had quickly dissipated as soon as the mediator made his suggestion. She knew she was stressed about the outcome, but she didn’t realize how wound up she was until it all ended.
“That is so amazing. I almost wish I could have been there just to see his face,” Abi said.
Kailynn laughed. “Oh, trust me. It was the best.”
Drew’s jaw had gone completely slack during the reading. He really thought he had it in the bag to win, and apparently hadn’t thought that Kailynn had any shot of finding out what he had been doing behind her back. The satisfaction of knowing he was being punished for his indiscretions was incredible.
Chase had been right. Them taking a recess to grab lunch was beneficial. She didn’t know what Drew’s lawyer had said to him, but she clearly had talked some sense into him to accept what the mediator suggested. He looked as if he wanted to fight it out, but his lawyer had given him a small shake of the head when he opened his mouth to speak. Eventually, he conceded.
Drew had likely been expecting to have a payout to live off of for a while until he found a job. Unless he had been hiding something, Kailynn knew he didn’t have a lot of money in savings. So the fact that he got very little money would sting a bit.
She didn’t feel bad in the slightest. He apparently thought it was okay to pay his girlfriend for work she wasn’t doing, so maybe she would support him until he could get work… although Kailynn highly doubted that would happen after the exchange she witnessed at the diner.
“So, I have some other gossip,” Kailynn said.
Abi leaned forward in her chair. “Do tell.”
“Chase and I went to breakfast this morning, and Drew and Sheila showed up.”
“Was that awkward?”
Kailynn nodded. “It was at first, but they didn’t see me. Chase was the one facing their booth and they must not have recognized him.”
“Small world.”
“That’s not the gossip.”
Abi leaned forward again. “Go on.”
“So Sheila apparently doesn’t understand that Drew can’t write her checks any longer out of the company and she was making this big stink about how he can’t afford to buy her breakfast.”
