He lifted his head up and looked into her eyes. She smiled, seemingly slightly embarrassed.
“If you give me a minute, I’ll be ready to go again.”
Her eyes widened. “How about we take this back to your place?” Her eyes darted to the door. “I didn’t realize I was going to be so loud and your secretary is still here.”
He laughed and glanced at the closed door. “Oops.”
Her face spiked red.
He pulled back and helped her off his desk. Looking around, he grabbed the first thing he saw to clean up—a box of tissues. Offering it to her, she quickly pulled a few out. He turned away to give her privacy while he cleaned himself off and dressed. When he turned back around, she was waiting next to his desk.
Chase grabbed her hand and pulled her into his chest. “Now, how about we take this private?”
She only smirked and tugged him toward the door.

Kailynn followed Chase into his place while he held the door open. She smiled timidly and stood to the side as he walked to his kitchen table to set down the Chinese takeout they grabbed as an afterthought. She had shot Abi a text on the way back to Chase’s place to let her know she wasn’t coming home right away, but she got what she wanted. Abi sent her a bunch of winking and eggplant emojis as if she knew what they had been up to, making Kailynn blush.
It mortified her at the thought of Eileen hearing them, but when they left, his secretary was nowhere to be seen. Kailynn didn’t know if Eileen had heard them and left, or if she happened to leave before anything started. Chase didn’t seem too concerned, but Kailynn couldn’t help feeling self-conscious at the thought of getting caught.
She had to remind herself that they could do whatever they wanted now that Chase was no longer her lawyer. She had no reason to be nervous about it.
Yet, here she was—suddenly shy while she stood off to the side watching Chase arrange the food on the table.
He looked over at her and smiled. “Let’s dig in.”
She smiled and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear before sitting in the chair he had pulled out for her. When he sat across from her, he handed her a plate and they both dished up their meals.
He glanced up at her as he took his first bite. After he swallowed, he wiped his mouth with a napkin.
“You look uncomfortable. Is this about Eileen?”
Kailynn blushed again at the thought. She nodded in response.
He shrugged. “You have nothing to be embarrassed about. She probably left before anything happened, and if she didn’t,” he shrugged again, “I’m the one who needs to be embarrassed.”
He was right. At least she didn’t have to work with Eileen afterward. She pushed the thought of them being heard aside and focused on her food.
“Are you relieved that everything is over?”
Kailynn nodded. “I’m so relieved. It’ll be weird running the company by myself, but I’m glad about it. Now I can see what expenses are coming up and monitor my profit.”
“I think it’ll end up working out really well for you.”
“I hope so.”
They continued to eat in silence for a few minutes.
“Is this strange?” she asked.
“Strange how?”
“We went from a professional relationship to this.”
A smile spread across his face. “I sure like this more.”
“I do, too. I just think it’s... strange, I guess.”
