“As good as I can be, I guess.”
“I’m going to make sure you get everything you’re owed. We won’t settle for less.”
Of course, she was happy to hear him say that, but she couldn’t help but feel sad over the whole situation. “I know you will, and I appreciate it.”
“Is there anything I can do for you?”
“Aren’t you already doing everything you can for me?”
He had already spent hours going through her files and creating a plan of action. What more could he possibly do?
“I meant as a friend.”
She glanced up at him and saw the sincerity written across his face. “Honestly? I don’t think so. I’m still processing.”
“Understandable.”
The silence passed between them for a few minutes while he shuffled some papers around in the various files, putting things away.
Her phone ringing interrupted the silence. She fished it out of her purse and looked at the caller ID. She turned it toward Chase.
“It’s Drew.”
He shook his head. “Don’t answer it. I would recommend not discussing anything with him until this case is over. I wouldn’t want him to find something to use against you.”
That was a good enough reason than any to ignore him. She hit the decline button, and a text came through shortly after.
Can we please talk?
She quickly typed out a reply. All communication needs to go through our lawyers. I have nothing to say to you.
Before she hit send, she showed it to Chase, who gave her the nod of approval.
Don’t be ridiculous. We can discuss things without the lawyers getting involved. This is going to cost a ton of money if I keep having to call my lawyer to discuss the business with you.
She read the text aloud to Chase, who only laughed.
“Maybe he should have thought about that before he screwed you over.”
Kailynn looked up at him in surprise. She knew Chase was on her side, but the amount of venom in his voice was something she hadn’t heard before.
And it turned her on. She shook the thoughts away and then powered off her phone without replying to Drew and dropped it into her purse.
Chase smiled as he watched her. He straightened the stack of papers in his hand and put them into his briefcase before snapping it shut.
“I don’t know about you, but I’m starving. Care to join me for dinner?”
Her heart skipped, and for the first time in several days, a genuine smile came to her face. “I would love to.”
Kailynn followed Chase over to a local Italian restaurant. It was one she had been to a few times as a child with her family, but wasn’t one she frequented otherwise. Chase, on the other hand, was a huge fan of the place and everyone knew his name.
Literally.
Every single person who passed talked to him like he was an old friend.
“Come here often?” Kailynn teased as the fourth employee to pass them said ‘hello.’
Chase laughed. “I’m Italian. It would be a sin for me not to come here. I love this place.”
