“I’m going to take care of this for you.”
She leaned into him, so he wrapped a second arm around her. Her arms slowly wrapped around his waist as she buried her face into his neck.
Her jasmine shampoo engulfed him, taking him deeper into the embrace, until he was leading her over to the couch. He sat down and tugged her down next to him. She nearly crawled into his lap to get closer as he pulled her back into his arms, her legs lying across his lap as she sank into his chest.
He knew he shouldn’t be thinking of anything beyond making her feel better, but he couldn’t help it. She felt amazing in his arms, and he wanted nothing more than to make her happy—to make her his.
He kissed her temple. “It’s okay. I’ll take care of this.”
She tipped her head back to look up at him; her face only a few inches from his. Her mascara had run down her cheeks, but her tears had subsided. His eyes jumped down to her lips, so full and luscious, tinged pink by her lipstick. He wondered what it would feel like to have them pressed against his.
His arms tightened around her, and she pushed up, locking her lips with his. Stars danced above his head as she kissed him. His mind completely blanked as his carnal instinct took over. He deepened the kiss and hauled her completely onto his lap so she straddled him.
Her hips ground into him, and he groaned as his erection strained against his pants. Her body moved on top of him. He kissed her deeper, trying to refrain from taking her right there on his couch. And then his brain caught up to his actions, and he pulled back quickly, startling her.
“We can’t...”
She gave him a hurt look before she moved to slide off him, but he grabbed her wrist, keeping her in place. “We can’t because of my code of ethics. Lawyers can’t date their clients. I could be disbarred.”
“Oh,” she said softly. “I’m sorry.”
She made a move to slide off him again, but he held her waist.
“Look at me.” When she looked him in the eyes, he continued. “I want this, but I can’t for the sake of my career. Do you understand?”
She nodded, but the look on her face still said she was unsure.
“I’m not just feeding you a line. I can show you proof if you’d like.”
She laughed, which he took as encouragement and continued.
“Let’s keep this professional until I’m no longer representing you.”
“Okay,” she whispered, before moving off him. She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear and looked around, not meeting his gaze.
He reached out and put a finger under her chin, lifting her face up to his. “Trust me. I think you can tell how much I want this, but I can’t do anything right now.”
Her eyes flickered down to his crotch, and she cracked a smile. Nothing had been left to the imagination.
He stroked her cheek. “You look beautiful tonight. The purple is stunning on you.”
“Thank you,” she whispered.
“I thought tonight might be hard for you based on everything you were going to see, so I got you something.” He got up and walked to his kitchen before coming back with the bottle of wine and two wine glasses. She laughed.
He set them on the coffee table. “And, if this isn’t what you want, then I have this.” He went back to the kitchen and grabbed the half gallon of ice cream with two spoons.
Her laugh rang out as she reached for a spoon and didn’t hesitate to pop the top off the ice cream.
“This will do.”
He sat down next to her again and scooped his own heaping spoonful of ice cream.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
He gave her a quick side hug. “You’re welcome. Now, let’s figure out how we’re going to get you everything you want from your ex.”
The smile that came across her face sped his heart up.
