“I can wait until Monday.”

“If you insist.” He pushed the cart through the store with only the board game sitting in it. “What kind of food do you like?”

“For… a date?” Certainly he wasn’t asking her out on a date, right? Wasn’t there some sort of ethics code attorneys had to follow not to date their clients?

“Um, well.” He scratched his face as he came to a stop in front of the food aisles. “I was actually referring to food for game night.” A little smile tilted his mouth. “But you’re more than welcome to tell me what kind of food you like on a date.”

Her face burned.Good God. Where is a rock when you need one?

“Oh, of course. I’m sorry. I didn’t understand where you were going with that.”

“It’s okay. I wasn’t really clear about what I was asking.” He smiled at her and pushed his cart down the chip aisle.

“Abi, Logan, and I all like chips. We’re all pretty simple. You saw it last night. Pizza, beer, soda—we’re happy.”

“My kind of people.” He shot a smile in her direction, making his dimples pop, and her heart melted a bit.

Be cool, Kailynn. Be cool.

“Well, we’re people.”

What the hell was that? Get your shit together.

He laughed.

“I mean, we are people too.” She slapped her hand to her head.

That wasn’t any better.

He only laughed harder.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know what I’m trying to say.”

“You’re okay.”

She looked around for an escape. “You know, I should probably get going. Abi is expecting me.”

Dirty liar!

A look of disappointment crossed his face when his smile fell briefly before it picked back up. “I’ll see you tonight, right?”

She nodded and backed up. “See you tonight.”

And before she could say anything else humiliating, she left.

Chase ran around his kitchen, prepping different food items. He didn’t cook often, but he knew how. However, with how poorly everything was being executed at the moment, it was impossible to tell.

When the smoke detector went off, he turned off the burners and opened a window. He waved his hands in front of it to get the smoke to dissipate before leaning back against the counter and tossing his head back.

This wasn’t going well.

A knock sounded on his door just as the smoke detector shut off.

Pulling it open, he found Kailynn on the other side.

“Hey.” He looked at his watch quickly, wondering if he had miscalculated time. Nope. She was early.
