This needed to be done. She needed to make sure her heart was in it for the right reasons. She didn’t want to have any doubt about it later, and the sooner she figured it out, the better.
Kailynn got in the shower and stood under the hot stream, trying to wake herself up. She needed to focus and take her mind off Chase. Missing him the entire time would not help her sort her feelings.
After pulling on a pair of sweats and a t-shirt, she stepped into her office. Being that it was Saturday, she wasn’t expecting Maddie, but figured she could get ahead with her work. There were several unfinished projects still sitting in stacks on the shelves on the wall, and she needed to figure out what she was doing with them. Plus, her sketchbook contained several new designs she wanted to get started on.
She pulled out a roll of fabric that was dark purple. That was a color Chase told her he loved on her. She turned the fabric over in her hands and sighed. It was one of her favorite colors. Suddenly a vision came to her, and she sat down at her desk, sketching out another new design, temporarily forgetting her other projects.
In minutes, she was at the sewing machine, bringing the drawing to life. Hours went by, but it felt like minutes as she put the design together. Then she pulled out a container of beads and began hand stitching beads and sequins along the chest and hip line. Before she knew it, it was dark, but the dress was finished. She pulled it on the mannequin and sighed. It was one of her best pieces yet.
She picked up her phone and took a photo, then opened up her texts. Her finger hovered over Chase’s name.
She couldn’t text it to Chase. A sudden sadness washed over her. He was the one she wanted to share it with the most. She sat down on her chair and pulled up a message to Abi, attaching the photo. After sending it, she stood up and stretched before stepping out of the room and shutting out the light.
Her stomach grumbled, reminding her she hadn’t eaten at all that day. She pulled up the number for the local pizza parlor and placed an order. Once she hung up, a ping on her phone showed a message came through. She knew it was Abi responding, but her hopes were dashed when it wasn’t Chase.
That would look stunning on you. Did you try it on?
No. Maybe another day.
Come on, girl. It was made for you. Try it on and take a photo.
Too depressed.
As expected, her phone began ringing.
“Hi,” Kailynn said, tears immediately springing to her eyes.
“What’s wrong?” Abi asked.
“Chase and I broke up.”
“Oh no! What happened?”
Kailynn dropped onto her couch and threw her hand over her eyes. “It’s my fault. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t just using him after the whole Drew thing, so I suggested the split temporarily.”
“It sounds like you’re doing the right thing.”
“Am I?”
“Kailynn, if you felt like it was necessary, or if there was a chance that you thought you might be in it for the wrong reasons, it’s the right thing.”
Kailynn was silent for a beat. “I miss him.”
“Maybe that’s a good sign that you do care for him.”
She already knew she cared for him. It was the fact that she jumped into a new relationship so fast that had her worried.
“Maybe.”
A knock on her door told her that her food had arrived.
“Hey, my dinner just got here. I’m going to let you go.”
“Let me know if you need to talk. I’m here,” Abi said.
“Thank you.”
She pulled the door open for the pizza delivery guy and paid him. Just as he handed her the pizza, Chase walked by to his apartment. Kailynn paused as the pizza guy walked away, leaving her with a full view of Chase.
