The smile that lit Maddie’s face excited Kailynn. Kailynn showed Maddie out the door and then locked it behind her before throwing a fist into the air in victory.
“Finally!”
An enormous weight lifted from her shoulders.
Before she had the chance to walk away from the front door, a knock sounded. She looked through the peephole and smiled to find Abi standing on the other side. She pulled it open and let her in.
“Hey stranger!” Kailynn said.
“Hey! Girl, do I have some gossip to tell you!”
Kailynn grabbed two sodas out of the refrigerator and offered one to Abi as they settled on the couch. “Do tell.”
“So, get this. That Sheila girl that Drew has been seeing left him.”
Kailynn raised her eyebrows. “I’m not surprised. He wasn’t exactly the greatest boyfriend. Plus, after the whole scene at the diner, it’s far from shocking.” She laughed at the memory of Sheila throwing a fit about not getting money from Drew any longer.
“No, no, no. She left him because he’s no longer paying her.”
Kailynn choked on her drink, sputtering as a spasm filled her chest from the liquid going down the wrong tube.
“What?” she asked between fits of coughing.
Abi slapped her on the back. “I guess she was only in the relationship for the money. He thought it was more. Now that he isn’t giving her a regular check out of your company, she’s on to the next guy.”
Kailynn stared at Abi, dumbfounded. “Are you being serious right now?”
Abi held up three fingers. “Scout’s honor.”
“How do you even know that?”
“Logan and I went out to lunch, and she was seated at the booth behind us. She was gossiping all about it to her friend. She’s a serious gold digger.”
“But Drew wasn’t rich,” Kailynn pointed out.
“Apparently that didn’t matter as long as she was getting free money.” Abi shrugged.
Kailynn almost felt sorry for the guy.Almost.“Wow! Karma is a bitch.”
Abi laughed. “It was like listening to a soap opera. Logan and I didn’t talk the entire lunch since we were so busy eavesdropping.”
“I wish I could have been there. That would have been something worth hearing.”
“Oh, it was. Now watch him come crawling back to you.”
Kailynn laughed. “No way would he do that. He’s way too stubborn. Especially with how smug he looked during our mediation. He was so sure he was going to screw me over until Chase brought up the checks he was giving to Sheila and Jessica.”
“I don’t know, Kailynn. I wouldn’t be surprised if he called you up. He has nothing left. He lost his half of the company when he sold it to you, thinking he would get some large payout, only to not get much at all since he had paid the other women so much. And then he lost his gold-digging girlfriend, whom I’m sure he thought was the one. He had it good with you and he screwed it up. He’ll realize it, eventually.”
Kailynn brushed it off. There was no way he would attempt to contact her—not after everything they had been through. Instead of dwelling on it, she changed the subject.
“I hired someone today to do the marketing. Her name is Maddie.”
Abi kicked off her shoes and tucked her feet under her on the couch. “That’s exciting! Are you relieved?”
“Most definitely. I’ve been stressed about it for way too long. It feels like a giant weight lifted off me.”
“I bet.”
