“No. But the problem is that I don’t think I can afford another loan. And without the loan, I don’t know how to pay him.”
“How about you pay him off over several years?” Logan suggested.
“That could work.” Kailynn bit her lower lip. “Then I have to be in contact with him for longer than I care to.”
“Has Chase suggested anything yet?” Abi asked.
She shook her head. “No. He just said that it will all work out. I think he’s more focused on just trying to make sure I don’t get screwed.”
Her choice of words made her blush, and Abi bit back a smile. Kailynn glanced at Logan, who seemed oblivious to the comment.
“Well, you know,” Abi started, her look turning devious.
Kailynn cut her off. “No.”
Logan gave them both a puzzled look before settling on Kailynn. “I can take a look at your financials if you want. I may be able to help you figure out a payment schedule that Drew could be happy with based on the income you receive.”
“Really? You wouldn’t mind?”
“No, of course not. I’d be happy to help. I mean, I’m not an accountant, but I think I understand enough.”
“Thank you.” Kailynn wasn’t sure why she was so surprised he offered, but she was still getting used to the friendship. After the way she had treated Abi in the past, Kailynn figured it would take her a while to get back into both of their good graces. She had never had any issues with Logan. He and Abi didn’t start dating until this last year, so it wasn’t like he was ever around during Kailynn and Abi’s falling out. But she still felt like she owed Abi for everything she put her through in high school.
Logan looked at his watch. “I should go home. I have an early meeting tomorrow. Kailynn, I can help you out tomorrow night.”
She nodded and thanked him again as Abi walked him to the door. When Abi settled back on the couch, she stared at Kailynn.
“What?”
Abi smiled. “So... tell me what’s happening with Chase.”
“What do you mean?”
“Oh, come on! I know you two are attracted to one another. It’s obvious.”
Kailynn turned to face Abi and tucked her legs underneath herself. “Of course I’m attracted to him. He’s gorgeous. He’s smart. He’s sweet.”
“He has an amazing personality.”
“But he’s my lawyer.”
“Point being...”
“Point being that I don’t think he’s allowed to date clients.”
“Oh.” She frowned. “Well, that’s a bummer. He told you that?”
“I may have Googled it.” Kailynn blushed. “But even if he wasn’t my lawyer, don’t you feel like it’s too soon?”
Shehadjust gotten out of a nine-year relationship with Drew. Wasn’t she jumping the gun trying to get together with Chase?
“I guess that’s up to you and whether or not you feel ready. Think of it this way, were you still invested in the relationship with Drew toward the end?”
Kailynn thought back. Drew had certainly checked out of their relationship long before that. He had begun treating her differently, but she knew she wasn’t innocent in it either. Gone were any romantic dates or feelings. They acted more like business partners at work and roommates at home. She couldn’t even remember the last time they had been intimate. It had been months—maybe years.
“I guess not. We weren’t even acting like we were dating anymore. He was more of an annoying roommate.”
Abi smiled. “I can agree to that based on the phone calls I used to get about him.”
