Kailynn furrowed her eyebrows at the familiar, yet not so familiar, voice. It had been several months since she had spoken to him. She sighed and rubbed at her eyes.
“Drew. Is there something you needed?”
The anger that she felt for him was still there, but it had dampened significantly. While she didn’t care to be friends with him, she certainly didn’t want to hold ill will. She had much better things to focus her energy on—like her wonderful boyfriend and her thriving business.
“I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am. If you ever find it in your heart to forgive me, I would be forever in your debt.”
He sounded sincere. Kailynn softened her tone and let out a sigh. “I forgive you. I honestly don’t care to think about it anymore.”
He cleared his throat, something he always did when he had something important he wanted to say. She waited, knowing it would follow soon enough.
“I was wondering if you would ever take me back?”
She laughed. Was he for real? She glanced over at Maddie. “Um... no. I have an amazing new employee I hired to handle all the marketing. I would never consider taking back someone who was stealing from me.”
He stayed silent for a second, and she held the phone away from her ear to see if the call was still connected.
“I meant as your boyfriend. I miss you.”
This time, hysterical laughter bursted from her. Maddie looked over at her and a small smile came across her face. Kailynn knew she must look ridiculous, laughing so hard tears were streaming down her face, but she couldn’t help it. He had to be on crack.
“Kailynn, you don’t have to be so harsh,” he said.
That only made her laugh louder. “Are you kidding me? Drew, you took profits from our company and gave them to your secret girlfriends who you werecheatingon me with… in our apartment! Why would I ever consider being with you again? I’d have to be insane!”
“Because we were good together! Yes, I screwed up! But everyone makes mistakes.”
“For two years, Drew. For two years, you were cheating on me. We only broke up becauseIdumpedyou. You never had the decency to dump me yourself before seeing someone new. Before seeingtwonew people… that I know about.”
“I made a mistake. I’m sorry.”
“Yes, you did. Because I’m awesome, but I’m finally with someone who knows that and treats me like I’m someone special. That was something I never got and would never get from you. Goodbye, Drew.”
Before he could say anything else, she hung up. Then she burst out laughing again.
“Ex?” Maddie asked, though she clearly knew from hearing Kailynn’s side of the conversation.
“Yes. What a psycho.”
Kailynn had told Maddie everything that had happened between her and her ex when Maddie had first started working for her, so she didn’t feel the need to explain more now.
The doorbell rang, so she walked to the front door and looked through the peephole. Smiling, she pulled the door open. “Well, aren’t you a sight for sore eyes?”
Chase grabbed her hand and pulled her toward him, planting his lips right on hers.
“Hey beautiful,” he said when they came up for air.
She sunk into his arms. “Hey handsome.”
“Do you have time to go to dinner with me tonight?”
“Always.”
“Perfect. I just wanted to stop by to ask, but I’m about to head to a client lunch. I’ll pick you up at five o’clock.”
He pressed a kiss to her forehead before walking to his car, turning once to give her a smile and wave before disappearing into the parking lot.
She sighed dreamily and walked back to her workstation. Life was good.
