“As I said,” Ace said. “Don’t flatter yourself.”
“Ace!”
But he was already walking away, leaving me to my misery that I was slowly drowning in, and now I didn’t even have him to pull me out of it.
Chapter 39
-Valeri-
About a week had passed since I came home, and I had not spoken a word to my brother. He was pretty much just shutting me out, probably not wanting to discuss what had happened, and I understood that, but I couldn’t stand this silence. I couldn’t stand what was happening between us. I had come home for his sake! Why couldn’t we just talk?!
Eventually, I couldn’t take this anymore and decided to go see my brother, so we could talk this out. I found him where I knew he would be. His office. The door was slightly open, so I pushed it the rest of the way and then knocked on it, feeling so damn nervous. Damon only glanced up from his computer, before looking at it again.
I sighed and walked inside, closing the door behind me, before I walked over to him and placed myself down in front of him, trying a little smile, but he didn’t even look at me.
“Damon?”
He didn’t say anything.
“Can we talk?” I asked.
Still silence.
“Please, what is it going to take for you to talk to me?!” I asked.
Damon finally looked up from his computer, leaning a little back in his seat, as he looked at me.
“You lied to me, Val,” he said.
“Only because I knew how you would react,” I said.
“Clearly, you didn’t, or this could have gone a lot differently,” he said.
“Damon …”
“I love you, Val, but you kept secrets from me,” he said.
“You hate Gabriel!”
He nodded.
“I do,” he said, and I felt my heart squeeze in pain.
“I knew if I told you the truth, you would never have let us be together,” I said.
He nodded again.
“Then how can you say I wouldn’t know how you would react?!” I asked him.
Damon sighed and shook his head.
“Maybe if you had been honest, I wouldn’t have felt the need to try and kill him,” he said.
“Please, you have just been looking for a reason to fight him,” I said.
Damon narrowed his eyes a little, and I looked down a little.
“Sorry, but is it a lie?” I asked.
