He smiled smugly and then held out his arm.

“Anything for you, sweetheart.”

Chapter 5

-Gabriel-

Valeri was hesitant at first, but then she walked over to me and took my arm. I smiled happily and then started to lead her back to the party.

“What if he sees me?” she whispered.

“I will make sure he doesn’t,” I assured her.

“You seem so sure.”

I just smiled smugly, as I led her through the garden, only a few lights running along the path to show us where we were going. She held onto me tightly, and I felt so damn good feeling her cling to me like this. I knew I made her a little nervous too, but she was showing me trust too. I would make sure never to break that trust.

I had always imagined what it was like to find your mate, but I had never imagined it was going to be like this. I could understand better why Dominic had such a hard time staying away from Lara. It must have been true hell when she was taken too, and it only made me feel bad, that I hadn’t been able to protect her properly. I had been taken out as soon as I had opened that door. Shot and knocked out. Damon was the one who found me and stitched me up. I guessed I owed him for that, but I knew he would never accept me as his sister’s mate.

His sister …

Of all the people. She couldn’t have been someone else’s sister, could she?

“What?”

I simply couldn’t stop staring at her. She was mesmerizing with her long dark hair that curled a little towards the ends.

“Nothing,” I said.

“You keep looking at me, I’m afraid you will make us walk into a bush or something,” she chuckled.

“Trust me, little vampire, I got this.”

“Valeri. I gave you my name, so use it.”

Oh, it would be used, was all I could think, as we walked up the stairs leading inside, but then Valeri’s grip tightened on my arm.

“Wait …”

“It’s okay,” I said. “He won’t see you.”

“Yes, he will and then he will be mad!” she said.

“Aren’t you old enough to make your own decisions?” I teased.

“Of course!”

“Then why are you so afraid?”

“You don’t know my brother …”

“You said he didn’t hurt you,” I said, and my voice turned darker.

“He doesn’t, but it isn’t so simple.”

“Well, we can just hide out here if you want,” I said and smiled one of my flirty smiles. “I got a pretty good idea of how we can pass time.”

Valeri rolled her eyes and shook her head.
