“No? Maybe we should make it more interesting then,” I teased.

She shook her head, yet I saw something in her eyes. An interest, but she was … careful too. That was only good. Everyone should be careful of whom to trust in this world. I just needed to convince her that I could be trusted. I would always be someone she could rely on, but how? How did I prove that to her?

“I think you should show me the way back.”

“Can we take the long route?” I asked.

She crossed her arms and chuckled.

“You don’t want to show me back.”

“No,” I said honestly.

“Why not?” she asked.

“Maybe I like you.”

“You don’t know me,” she said, and I took a step closer.

“I could get to know you,” I said and moved even closer, so there were only inches between us. “I could get to know you real good.”

I knew she could see in my eyes what I meant, and when her own eyes darted to my lips, I knew she wanted me. She knew she was attractive to me, but I wondered if she understood why. Did she realize we were meant for each other? Should I say something or let her figure it out herself? I didn’t really know why I didn’t want to just shout it. Maybe I was afraid she would never accept me as hers, considering my reputation. Maybe she thought I couldn’t be trusted.

“What do you think, Valeri?” I whispered in a dark tone. “Do you want me to get to know you?”

She didn’t answer, and her eyes met mine.

“Do you want to know me?”

She swallowed hard, and I slowly placed my hands on her hips, bringing her closer. She didn’t fight me, but I could see she was still on alert. She didn’t know whether or not to give in to me, or if she would make a mistake doing so.

“I think we would like to get to know each other, don’t you?”

“I …”

I leaned down to her ear.

“I want to know what you taste like,” I said darkly.

I moved back and saw how big her eyes had grown, and I smiled at the sight of it. She just looked so sweet, good enough to eat in fact, and I definitely would get a taste. I needed one. I craved one. Just a small one. If she would accept that, then I could die happy.

“Tell me to let you go, and I will,” I whispered, making sure she knew she was in control of this.

I leaned closer and closer, my lips just hovering above hers, and I could feel the warmth from her sweet lips that I really wanted a taste of. I wanted to know if they were as soft as they looked. So plumb and so pink. Just … one … taste.

In the distance, I heard people laughing, and it made Valeri pull back and look behind me. Her eyes grew even bigger, but this time she looked scared. I watched her confused before she suddenly grabbed my hand and pulled me into the darkness, hiding us behind a bush and then looking around it. I watched her though, not able to take my eyes off her. I grabbed a lock of her dark hair, twirling it between my fingers and watching it mesmerized. She must have felt it and pulled her hair away but didn’t turn to look at me. I chuckled lowly before I looked over her head, and even though she was tall, I was still taller than her. Even though she was in heels.

“What are we looking at?” I whispered.

Just then, a group of male vampires appeared by the fountain, one of them carrying a bottle of Scotch and the rest with glasses in their hands. They were laughing and chatting, and I recognized one of them.

Damon …

“My brother …” I suddenly heard Valeri say.

I looked down at her confused, but she was still not looking at me.

“Which … Which one?” I asked, now feeling scared too.
