I looked at Lara again, and she was giving me a small smile.

“Trust me when I say that it is not worth fighting. I did it, and I feel so much better now that Dominic and I are connected,” she told me.

“I …

“I understand your brother is important and I am not saying you need to cut ties with him. I am saying I think it is time you tell him whom you want to be with and if he can’t accept that, then that is his problem,” she said.

“It’s not that easy,” I said.

“No, of course, not, he is your brother, but you need to fight for what you want Valeri, or else how will you ever get what you want?”

She was right … but I was not a strong person. I was scared. I was a coward. It was just easier to run than to fight. I had no idea how I was going to tell Damon that I wanted to be with Gabriel. He didn’t like Gabriel. Never had. He just didn’t trust him.

“I … I don’t know if I can.”

“Then maybe you could find a way to spend some time with Gabriel again?” she suggested.

“I …”

“I think you both need it, and it might just give you more reason to stand up against your brother. I mean, you like Gabriel, don’t you?”

I nodded.

“I do.”

“Then don’t miss this chance, Valeri. I really think you should take it.”

I sighed, not sure what to say. I wanted to see Gabriel again. Of course, I did. I wanted to see what it could be like between us, but I also loved my brother, and I knew there was no way he could accept my bond with Gabriel.

“I will think about it,” I told her.

Chapter 21

-Valeri-

It was in the middle of the day when I walked to the kitchen to get some water. All the curtains were pulled in front of the windows, but we had also specially made windows where the UV rays couldn’t penetrate. Still, we liked the darkness when we needed to sleep. I was on my way back to my bedroom when I noticed Damon sitting in his office still working.

“Hey,” I said.

Damon looked up from his computer and smiled.

“Hey,” he said.

It was strange. I had never had trouble talking to my brother, but I did now. Why was that? Had one night with Gabriel really changed me that much? Or did Damon feel this strange energy surrounding us too? I wasn’t sure what to think, and I just tried acting as normal as I could.

“Shouldn’t you be sleeping?” I asked him.

He chuckled a little.

“I should,” he said.

“But?”

“But I got council stuff to take care of,” he said.

“You are not the only man on the council,” I pointed out.

He smiled.
