It was quiet for a long time, as I just stood there, but soon the door opened a little, creaking loudly, and I pushed it open the rest of the way. As hybrids, we had certain skills. It came from the vampire blood in us. We could open locks and doors without touching them or turn on lights or turn them off. Didn’t mean we could just move everything, but there were a few things we could affect, but of course, our super strength would easily overpower most locks and doors anyway. So, we didn’t have to use those abilities much. I walked inside and closed the door behind me, finding Ace sitting on that mattress further inside the room, his back leaning against the wall. His room might not hold much, but it was his safe space anyway.
“Listen—”
“Why are you here?” he asked and lifted his head so he could look at me.
“I thought we should talk.”
“Why?”
“Because you didn’t show up to eat some breakfast,” I said.
He just looked away for a moment, before his dark eyes turned to me.
“I needed a moment to myself,” he said.
“I get that, but—”
“You wouldn’t be here if you got it.”
He narrowed his eyes and I sighed, annoyed.
“Listen, it was not like I planned for it to happen.”
“But it did happen,” he said.
“What do you want me to do? Reject her?” I asked.
He shook his head so damn calmly, it confused me why he seemed so upset.
“No,” he said. “I just wish she had stayed away.”
“So, I would never have found her?”
He didn’t even blink, as I asked that question, and he calmly answered:
“Yes.”
I shook my head in a way that indicated I couldn’t believe him right now.
“Why? So, we could be lonely together? Want me to crawl into your bed again? I mean it has been a while,” I said.
He looked even angrier when I said this, and he quickly moved to stand, stepping away from the mattress and coming over to me. He was only wearing a pair of dark leather pants that always fitted him so well. The thing was, while I preferred women, Ace and I just shared a deeper connection, and it was easy to make the loneliness go away on both sides when we were together. It hadn’t happened a lot. First, just a kiss when we were drunk. Then a touch. Then suddenly we were in one of our beds, but it could never evolve into more for me. It was also why I had told Dominic I just knew Ace better because I did. He knew him on a much deeper level.
“You are a fucking dick,” he said, as he stopped in front of me.
“I never said I was anything else,” I gave back.
“You don’t think it is sad she gets you?”
I felt my anger stir to life, going to new dangerous levels.
“Such a sweet innocent little female vampire getting stuck with such a dark and filthy hybrid who will fucking devour her and destroy her. No one can handle you, Gabriel,” he said darkly.
“No one but you?” I asked, knowing where he was going with this.
“We understand each other like no one else will,” he said. “You can’t deny that.”
“I don’t,” I said.
