“At least think about it,” Lara said.

“Okay,” I said. “I will think about it.”

Chapter 41

-Gabriel-

I had no idea how much time had passed since Valeri had left me. It felt like years as I drowned my sorrow in booze and went to illegal fight clubs just to burn off some energy. I couldn’t really fuck it all away, since Valeri was my mate, I found no one else attractive. Only her, and I never wanted to be with anyone else. She was just perfect. So sweet and delicate, yet she could take it hard too. I simply could not want anyone else, even if it wasn’t for the mate bond, I would still only want her.

I returned home one night. Not sure how long I had been gone, but instead of going to sleep, I just went right to the big living room where we also had a bar. It was in the middle of the day, so everyone was sleeping, or so I thought. As I poured myself something to drink, already quite drunk, I heard the floorboards creak. I turned in my chair, smiling as I saw Dominic.

“I should have guessed!” I said loudly.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

I held up the glass, so he could see the drink, and he shook his head.

“You have been gone for over a week.”

“I have?” I asked.

He nodded, and walked closer, just wearing a pair of sweatpants and looking like he had just gotten out of bed. Maybe he had. Had I been so loud I had woken him up? Probably, but I didn’t really care. I was having my own party, trying to forget that, in the end, my own mate wouldn’t even choose me.

“Are you okay?” he asked as he sat down beside me.

“My mate left me.”

Dominic sighed.

“She didn’t really leave you. She just wanted to protect both of you,” he said.

“She left me.”

I made it sound like there was no room for discussion and there really wasn’t. I didn’t want to talk about it, because whenever I thought about it, I started to feel quite destructive, and just wanted to fall into my old habits.

“Gabriel …”

“Drink with me!”

I placed a glass in front of Dominic and poured him something to drink. He looked at me almost a little annoyed, but then when he saw it was clear how far into this deep and dark hole I was in, he just gave in and took the glass, taking a sip.

“Happy?” he asked.

“Not at all.”

“Gabriel …”

“How is everyone?” I asked before he could say anything.

“Good, but worried.”

“Oh, I’m sure you all are,” I said sarcastically.

“What is that supposed to mean?” he asked.

“I’m sure there is one person here who doesn’t miss me.”

“You mean Ace?”
