"Isn't it really up to your sister?"
He smiled a little as if he liked that answer.
"The world has not been kind to her."
"I know," I said.
"No, you don't. I know, because I was the one who took care of her. For years she barely even recognized me and was scared whenever I got close. It was why I had to hire help and only women. Eventually, she came back to me though. Tell me, how I can just give her up again?" he asked.
"But you're not giving her up. You are just letting her live her life. Isn't that what you truly want for her? To live her life, and not be so scared anymore?"
Damon seemed to think about my question and then he suddenly downed his drink, before he turned his whole body to me.
"Swear to me that it wasn't all a game, and you want her to be yours for the rest of your lives," he said.
I looked at him shocked, because I had not expected him to ask me this, but when he kept staring at me so seriously, I quickly found my voice.
"I swear."
"On your sister's grave."
"On my sister's grave," I said.
"Good."
He patted my shoulder and stood up.
"What? What is going on, Damon?" I asked.
"She is pregnant," he said and then started to walk away.
"What?!"

Chapter 47
-Gabriel-
I wasn’t sure I had heard correctly. I had imagined those words, right? But when Damon looked over his shoulder shortly and smiled a little, I knew I hadn’t imagined those words. He had really said it …pregnant. No … but of course, we hadn’t … Oh shit, what had I been thinking? Or had I always known it could happen and somehow hoped it would? I wasn’t sure what I had been thinking or if I even had. I had been so caught up in all of this mate thing and having Valeri all to myself that I just wanted to enjoy our time together.
“You’re kidding,” I said, as Damon walked away.
“Not really.”
He stopped and turned around, yet he seemed amused that I was more freaked out than him, or maybe he had had the time to really wrap his head around it. I could barely make sense of it. Valeri … pregnant … as in … pregnant. Our baby … in her. Really?!
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“Positive.”
“Funny!” I said dryly before I stood up.
Damon smiled. Apparently, he liked to see me like this, barely able to keep it together. I mean … I shouldn’t have been so surprised, but still … she was pregnant … really pregnant.
“I see you are taking the news well,” he chuckled.
