I turned to look at him again, and he seemed almost shocked by the way I was looking at him, almost with broken eyes.
“What is going on with you?” he asked.
“I said it was nothing.”
“And I don’t believe you,” he said.
“Damon … let it go.”
He shook his head.
“No, you’re not eating … Are you having a setback?” he asked.
“No …”
“Then what is it?!” he asked.
“Just let it go!”
“How can I?!”
“Well, you haven’t spoken to me for weeks. Why care now?!” I asked.
Damon looked almost hurt, and I felt so bad for raising my voice. I didn’t want to hurt my brother. I owed him so much and I loved him like crazy, but I couldn’t talk about this. He would freak out. He would probably kill Gabriel.
“I know I have been distant,” he said. “I told you I needed time.”
“Maybe I need time now,” I said.
Damon shook his head a little.
“Damon!”
“It is not that I don’t want to give it to you,” he said. “But I can’t let you starve yourself.”
“I don’t have an appetite.”
“Tell me why!”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Why not?!” he asked.
“Because I can’t!” I shouted.
Damon seemed shocked and ran his eyes all over me as if he was looking for the reason why I couldn’t tell him, but he couldn’t see anything, because there was nothing to see yet. Maybe there never would be … I still hadn’t made a decision.
“Why?” he asked.
“Because I just … I can’t!” I told him.
“Tell me why.”
I groaned and placed my head in my hands before I took a deep breath and looked at him again.
“Because just like I didn’t tell you about Gabriel, I know I can’t share this with you. You wouldn’t react the way I would need you to,” I said.
