“I … Eh, come in,” I said, surprised he had come to see me.
I knew he had been avoiding me, and I had let him since there wasn’t much that I could say that would make things better. I had still lied to him. Damon opened the door and walked in, looking at me worried. He closed the door behind him and then walked over to me, sitting down on the edge of the bed.
“What’s going on, Val?” he asked.
“What do you mean?”
“I hear you aren’t eating and you have been locked in your room for two days,” he said.
“Oh, you noticed that,” I said a bit sarcastically.
“Val …”
“What?!” I asked. “It’s not like you’re speaking to me.”
Damon sighed and shook his head a little.
“I needed time.”
“And have you had enough time?” I asked.
He didn’t answer that, his green eyes just locked with my own. We looked a lot like each other. Some had even thought we might have been twins, but we weren’t. Damon was over fifty years older than me.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
“Nothing …”
I looked away, grabbing a handful of the sheets and trying my best to calm my nervous heart.
“Something is going on, or you would be eating,” he said.
“I’m just not … hungry.”
“For two days now?”
I nodded, but I could see out of the corner of my eye that Damon didn’t believe me. Who would? It was a bad lie.
“Val, I know we have had our problems lately, but if something is wrong with you, I want to know,” he said.
“So, you can take care of me?” I asked and looked at him.
“Why wouldn’t I?” he asked.
“Maybe you do it a little too much.”
He looked at me surprised, and I didn’t mean to sound cruel. I just wanted him to see that him, being so overprotective, was the reason I was in this mess.
“What is that supposed to mean?” he asked.
I sighed, looking away. I couldn’t say the words directly. I didn’t want to hurt him.
“Nothing.”
“No, let us be honest,” he said.
“Where has that gotten us?” I whispered.
“Valeri!”
