“Something the lord of the house must have caught too,” she said.
I smiled a little and nodded.
“He isn’t doing great either,” I said.
“We see him pace around in the house or lock himself in his office,” she told me.
“Yeah … that might just be my fault.”
Dina shook her head.
“It could never be your fault. Your brother cares about you very much,” she said. “Whatever it is that has happened between you two, he will come around.”
I looked down at my empty plate, feeling so sad.
“No … I don’t think he will. Not this time.”
“But, my lady, he is your brother.”
“Yeah, but this time, I really screwed him over,” I said.
Dina looked at me shocked, and I just smiled a little at her.
“Long story.”
“Then perhaps you could try and fix it, so you will get better, and, so will he?” Dina suggested.
“I want to!” I said. “I just don’t know how.”
I threw my arms into the air, and let them fall, so they landed a little hard on the armrests, making a littlebangsound. Dina smiled at me a little.
“You barely have to do anything. He always seems to want to help you,” she said.
“Maybe that is the problem this time,” I said.
“How so?”
“I don’t want his help this time,” I whispered.
Dina seemed surprised.
“It’s too much. I get too much of his help,” I said. “And it makes him unable to see that I sometimes can make my own decisions.”
“He knows that.”
I shook my head.
“No, I don’t think he does …”
Dina looked at me for a while, looking like she wasn’t sure what to say. I knew she was just trying to cheer me up, but nothing she could say would help me. I knew Damon and I would just have to figure it out on our own. At some point, he had to talk to me. We lived together after all.
“Try and eat a little, at least,” Dina said.
I sighed but knew she was right. I had to try. I reached over the table for the ball of fruit and took a few grapes, but I had only eaten two when I felt strange.
“My lady? Are you okay?”
Dina must have seen the weird expression on my face.
