My comment earns me another quick kiss. Then I pat my round belly. “And Junior loves you too.”
Carter lightly touches my baby bump. “I love Junior, and I can’t wait to meet him.”
We’re expecting a boy any day now, and we’re very excited. In fact, Junior is a day late. I wish the little guy would hurry up. I can hardly wait to meet him. And, of course, I’d like to verify that my feet are still at the ends of my legs.
The nursery is all set. It’s decorated with animal wallpaper and filled with every toy a newborn could possibly need, thanks to his aunts. A couple of those toys look pretty complicated, so it may be a few years before he can use them. I’m pretty sure one of the toys is designed to teach him calculus.
“I have the best life,” Carter says, holding me in a loose hug.
“Me too,” I say. “Me too.”
I move to climb into the truck but before I can, I suddenly feel a weird sensation. I stop, look at Carter, then my water breaks. Right there. In the driveway.
“At least it didn’t happen in the truck,” I tease Carter.
“Are you okay?”
I know he’s concerned, so I quickly tell him, “I’m fine. My water just broke. Ready to become a dad sometime soon?”
He kisses me one more time. “You bet. Let the adventure begin.”
I laugh, happier than I ever thought possible. Boy, do I love Carter.
