He narrowed his eyes at her. “Not talking about that shit with you.”
“Well, at least we know he’s a creeper that’s not into kids,” Win said thoughtfully to Wren. Wren nodded her head in agreement, even as Rogue snarled like a feral animal.
“Alright, that’s enough,” he growled at them. “Let me make this very fucking clear, got it?” Both girls watched him, saying nothing. Now they were getting somewhere, Wren thought. When men got angry, they showed their true colors. Subtly, she braced and poised on the balls of her feet to move fast if things went south. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Win do the same. “Whatever is going on with you two and Scarlett, I want to help. I should be fucking walking the other damn way and never looking back, but that’s not who I am. Not who we as a club are.
“The only thing I want from you is the damn truth. I want to know who hurt you, or who you’re running from. Depending on your answer, I’ll either take care of them for you, or I’ll help make sure they never find you. You two are still kids and you have to deal with all the bullshit of high school, and dating, and all that nonsense. You shouldn’t be looking over your damn shoulders, or practicing your fighting skills. Yeah, didn’t know I knew about that, did you?” he said darkly, glaring at them.
“So you’re following us now?” Wren asked tightly.
“Don’t need to when one of my brothers saw you both making your way into that dirty little shithole on the other side of town a couple days ago.”
“You going to tell, Scarlett?” Win asked.
Rogue shook his head. “I figure if you want to do that shit, there’s a reason. Not happy that you’re hiding it, though, and you shouldn’t be in that area of town alone.”
“Wait, did you send someone to follow us home?” Wren demanded, suddenly remembering the uneasy feeling she was being watched and followed the entire way home the other night.
“I followed you,” he corrected. “Wasn’t about to let you two walk home at dark alone.”
It did not sit well with Wren that she hadn’t been able to spot him. She had gotten complacent, and that wasn’t allowed. It couldn’t happen. She looked at Win and saw her frowning hard too. They wouldn’t be letting it happen again.
“Fine, so you followed us, and now you’re back to watching over the house and Scarlett,” Wren said calmly.
“And you two. Whatever shit is going on involves you both.”
Wren wasn’t sure how she felt at his admission. Still, it was odd to have someone who was trying to help you, or protect you, and wasn’t looking for something in return. Well, not something that was immediately obvious, anyway. She looked over at Win, trying to figure out what to say.
What did they tell him? Neither of them wanted to tell him the full story. That was theirs and Scarlett’s to share, and while Rogue didn’t seem to be a threat, they weren’t going to just lay everything at his feet. Not until he proved that they could trust him.
Finally, Wren looked back at Rogue and said, “We’re not ready to tell you yet what our story is, and I doubt Scarlett is ready to tell you hers, either. But, as far as we know, right now, we’re safe and the ones who are after us have no clue where we are. We’ve kept off the radar enough that they aren’t chasing us anymore. So you don’t need to sit out here night after night protecting us.”
“And would you tell me if whoever these people are came back around?” he asked.
Wren pursed her lips. “Probably,” she finally said. “We don’t trust people easily, Rogue, so if you’re jerking us around and using us to get to Scarlett, we will make you hurt. You might be a biker, but we’re teenage girls with crazy, out of control hormones and can make you all look like pussies before we’re through with you.”
“Add in PMS and you’re really up shit creek,” Win added with a snicker.
“Figuring that out already,” he muttered.
They glared at him, but Wren asked, “So are you going to stop hanging out here at night?” He shrugged noncommittally. She huffed out a breath. “You really are nuts. Fine, be a stalker, I don’t care, but you won’t win Scarlett over this way. And if you want her to tell you what’s going on, we’re going to need to come up with a plan.”
“We?” he repeated slowly.
“Yes,we,” she sniffed. “You really think we’re going to let you try and woo Scarlett this way? Please.”
“Bikers don’t woo people,” he growled. “And I already told Scarlett if that’s what she wants, she won’t be getting it from me.”
“Fine, no wooing,” Win said briskly. “But we’re the ones who know Scarlett best, so we’re the ones to make sure you don’t land flat on your face.”
“Why the hell am I listening to teenage girls?” he muttered.
“Because Scarlett hasn’t had much fun in her life in the past few years, and it’s time she started,” Wren told him honestly.
“And we want to be there to laugh when you fuck up,” Win added with a wicked grin.
