He clicked a button and the detective’s voice filled the room, along with one that had Rogue sitting forward, body stiffening as he listened.
“Your people were spotted,” Detective Isaac said immediately.
“And?” the cool voice on the other end replied, unworried.
“They were spotted by the Dragons MC and now the club’s looking into them. Won’t be long before they figure shit out. You don’t want to mess with them. They took out Santiago Ramirez and Miguel Rojas.”
The voice on the other end was quiet. “Well, I’ll just have to thank them, won’t I? Why are they looking into my people?”
“I don’t know, but if they are, that means someone has tipped them off, and you don’t want that heat. Trust me.”
“I did not ask your opinion, Detective,” the voice said icily.
Detective Isaac gulped audibly. “No, sir, you didn’t,” he agreed meekly. “Would you like me to keep my ear to the ground?”
“Not yet,” the voice finally said. “I’ll have my people look into it. Until then, avoid them, and don’t do anything that will result in your supply drying up, got it?” he asked coldly. The deadly warning was perfectly clear.
“Yes, sir.”
“Good. The next shipment will be coming through soon, and I expect you to make sure it gets through without any problems. Understood?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Wouldn’t want your cop buddies to realize your…interesting tastes, now would we?”
“No, sir. Thank you. I’ll wait for the message.”
The call ended and Code pulled up a map of the country. “I wasn’t able to ID the person on the other end, but I’m working on it. They had a scrambler on their phone, and I’m not even sure the voice on the other end is right. You can hear a tinny sound in the background.”
“You think he’s covering his voice in case the call is traced and recorded,” Fury summarized.
“Smart,” Ice said reluctantly.
“You think it’s Tanya’s father?” Ink asked Code.
“I’m not too sure,” Code admitted. “I checked his phone records but no calls came in or out to any of his lines.”
“He’d have a burner for something like this,” Rogue said tightly.
“What I want to know is, what kind oftastesdoes Detective Issac have,” Steel said coldly. His blue eyes glittered with fury. “Because I have the feeling he’s not talking about drugs.”
Rogue’s gut blazed with rage at just what that implied. “It’s people.” It wasn’t a question.
Steel nodded. “We’ve looked into him enough to know he’s a sleeze bucket, but nothing’s hinted he’s got a thing for something fucked up?” He looked at Code for confirmation.
“Nope,” Code confirmed. “But I’m digging still. It’s been awhile since we’ve looked into him, so it’s possible his involvement in this only started recently. It could explain why he sounds so nervous.”
“And why he doesn’t want us on his tail,” Savage pointed out darkly. “If it’s been longer, and this asshole has been helping run trafficking through our town, he’s going to pay.” The malice in his voice was unmistakable.
Detective Isaac just signed his own death warrant.
“What we need to do now is find our traffickers, get them out of the way, and then figure out what is coming through our town,” Ice said calmly.
Everyone agreed loudly, and Savage nodded. “Alright, we’ll worry about our detective problem after we get this other mess cleaned up.” He looked at Code. “Now that you’ve identified the girl, do you have any idea where they might be?”
Code clicked a few buttons and brought up a hotel registration. “She’s staying at the inn here in town. She’s booked the only large suite. Has two smaller bedrooms off the bigger one.”
“One for each of the thugs,” Fury guessed.
