My power thrummed beneath the skin, nearly vibrating, and I closed my eyes, releasing it. It flowed willingly into his body and the broken skin over his chest glowed a faint blue. I tried to visualize it stopping the bleeding, closing the wounds. Mending him. Healing him. Reviving him.

Still no heartbeat. A shaky cry escaped me.

I pushed into his chest harder, begging it to work. But the exhaustion was setting in and I was losing my grasp. My shoulders slumped as my arms shook and I forced it to continue. My vision tunneled into him, blackening at the edges.

The wound at his chest slowly closed, the skin rippling with blue light as it mended. The blood sizzled, evaporating into smoke. I released a breath and paused, waiting.

But he didn’t move.

I ripped the rest of his soaked shirt off in a frenzy.

There was no wound, the blood was gone, but there was still no pulse.

“No,” I cried and cupped his face, kissing his forehead, his cheeks, his closed eyes. “No, no, no.”

I sat back on my heels as my thoughts spiraled. “I-I need more.”

More energy.

More power.

My hand shot to the sky again, but when the lightning struck this time, I held, screaming as I fed from it. Absorbed it. The crackling intensity burned into my palm, splitting the skin down my forearm, revealing a silver light instead of blood.

My hand shook. My whole body shook with exhaustion and the overload of power. But I clenched my jaw and braced myself as I stared at Rogue’s pale face. Every muscle in my body strained, but I continued.

I took everything the sky offered me.

I will save you, even if it kills me.

Just when it felt like I would explode, the bolt disappeared and I slammed my palm into his chest. Bolts of silver lightning erupted in every direction across his skin.

“Start his heart,” I commanded. My vision darkened and I swayed. “Start. His. Heart!”

Every ounce of power drained from my body into him and my arms collapsed. I slumped on top of him, weak and utterly consumed. Turning my head, I pressed my ear to his chest.

Thump.

I froze.

Thump thump.

Thick arms wrapped around me and I gasped. A fresh wave of tears fell as I struggled to sit up, meeting the warm red eyes staring back at me.

“Little storm,” he rasped and reached a hand up, wiping the tears from my cheek with his thumb. My hand reached up to cover his and I pulled it down to my mouth, kissing his palm.

“I—”

The word stuck in my throat as pain laced my abdomen.

I slowly looked down to see the head of an arrow protruding from my stomach. Rogue roared behind me as I turned in the direction of the archer.

I gasped, choking on pain. Evander was standing across the field with the bow in his hands.

Why…

Suddenly, a shimmering started above his shoulder. My mouth fell open as Delphia’s vengeful face faded into existence behind him. The icy face of death incarnate replaced her once cheerful one.

She leaned down to his ear and his eyes bulged as she whispered something unintelligible. A sword thrust through his chest. He heaved, falling to his knees.
