“Zoey?” he said as she slumped against him and passed out cold. “Call Lea,” he yelled at Aaron as he lifted Zoey’s limp body into his arms. It was then that he noticed the blood trickling down Zoey’s legs. “Fuck that, tell Brett to meet us in the parking lot, we’ll drive here there ourselves.” he said to Aaron as he ran with her in his arms towards the parking lot.
He had never been more afraid in his life. His heart pounded so loudly that he could barely hear Zoey talking to him. She was telling him to call Dylan and to tell him that she was sorry she got so worked up.
“You just hang on,” he told her over and over.
When he arrived at the parking lot, Lea was there with Brett. He slid into the back seat of Brett’s car, still holding Zoey in his arms.
Seconds later, Dylan rushed up from the main pathway, looking scared and worried.
Lea climbed in the back seat with Zoey and tore off Zoey’s shorts in one quick movement as Dylan slid into the passenger seat. Brett gunned the car and spun out for a moment before the wheels caught on the gravel and they headed towards the hospital at high speed.
Dylan held onto Zoey’s hand and talked to her while Lea examined Zoey. He avoided looking down, but there was so much blood coming from between Zoey’s legs, he couldn’t help but stare.
He’d never seen so much blood. When Lea slapped his arm, he focused.
“Your shirt, now,” Lea said again.
He lifted Zoey slightly until he could pull off his still-wet camp shirt and handed it to Lea.
He lost track of time. Lost track of everything. At some point, Zoey passed out. He held her head, stopping it from rocking back and forth with the movement of the car.
He focused on her face, listened while Dylan kept promising the world, promising anything just for her to be okay. To wake up.
Through it all, Brett and Lea were the only two calm ones in the car. Brett was talking on a phone as he zipped through the traffic quickly.
They were three quarters of the way to the hospital when flashing lights started following them.
“They’re going to escort us the rest of the way.” Brett explained quickly.
Sure enough, the cop car sped past and pulled in front of them, paving the way through the rows of cars for them.
When they stopped in front of the ER, he helped slide Zoey’s limp body out of the back seat and onto the stretcher. Lea and Dylan rushed through the double doors with the gurney while he stood there, still covered in some of Zoey’s blood, holding his hands out as if unsure of what had just happened.
Brett moved to his side. “Come on, we’ll head inside and get you cleaned up. Maybe find you another shirt.” He took Damion’s arm and led him inside.
“What just happened?” he asked.
“My guess?” Brett said, looking over at him and then taking a deep breath. “Miscarriage. Lea had told Zoey that the pregnancy had complications.”
“Will she be okay?” Damion asked.
“Lea will take good care of her,” he assured Damion. “Come on, we’ll head in and wait with the rest when they get here.”
“Lisa… Aaron.” He shook his head. “The woman…”
“Aaron will handle it,” Brett assured him. “Let’s get you cleaned up before the others arrive.”
Within the hour, the waiting room was flooded with camp employees. Zoey was loved by everyone.
When Jules walked in, he relaxed finally. He’d been worried about her all this time, just knowing what Lisa had said about her husband chasing skirts. Brett had informed him that Aaron had escorted the couple off the campgrounds. But that didn’t stop him from worrying until he saw Jules for himself.
“Any news?” Jules asked him after she hugged him.
“She’s resting. They’ll keep her overnight,” he explained. “Dylan should be coming out soon.”
Zoey’s family was back with her now. Each time someone brought flowers, they were handed off and taken to Zoey.
“I shouldn’t have let…” he started and heard his voice hitch.
