She took a deep breath, nodding as a tear rolled down her cheek, dripping off her jaw.

Several gunshots rang out inside. People began to scream. Glass shattered. Luca and I drew our guns at once.

I glanced back over my shoulder. “You need to go, now!”

Leo grabbed Jane and raced around the side of the hotel.

“Are you ready?” I sighed, cocking my gun.

Luca snickered. “I didn’t want to fucking do this tonight.” He loosened his tie then unbuttoned his top two buttons with his free hand. Taking his rosary out from under his shirt, he let it fall to his chest. “Let’s go.”

Leo slammed the limo door, leaning forward. “Take us to 157 West 57th Street.”

“What's going on?” Shaking, my voice departed my lips unsteadily. I tried to calm myself down by taking deep breaths.

They found out who I really was, and they were going to kill me. It was my fault I got myself involved in it. I should have never taken the offer, but then again Mr. Rovati deserved whatever he had coming to him. He had always been so cold to me and never had once gotten my name right until tonight. I was shocked.

“The boss asked that you be taken home, so that’s what we’re doing.” Leo concentrated on our surroundings, constantly peeking out all the windows.

“I know but I don't understand what I did.” I had to pry for any information.

“Listen, I do what I'm told. We're taking you home.”

I had never actually seen Leo before, so I had no idea who he was in relation to anyone. “Are you related to him? You’re Italian.”

And that was that. He did not answer my question. Maybe I insulted the Italian culture? Maybe I slipped up somehow. I did not understand why everything changed within seconds at the gala. What happened?

I texted Marco to call me and then texted my best friend Lily, to give her a small bite of info without going into too much detail. I stared up at the moonroof trying to hold back the tears welling in my eyes. I was doomed.

Leo immersed himself in his phone. He left nothing more than silence until we pulled up in front of the my apartment building. That is when he informed me he would be walking me to my door to ensure my safety. Once I was inside my apartment safely, I closed and locked the door immediately.

Within seconds, my phone rang. I yanked it out of my clutch, answering promptly.

Hey Marco.

Hey! What's going on? I got your text.

My boss is such an ass. He had me go to a gala with him and it was going great but then he suddenly had a car take me home.

What the hell?! Why?

I have no idea, but there were gunshots inside. I sighed, thinking maybe I said too much.

Gunshots?! Do you want some company? I know it's kind of late.

Normally, I would love that, but I think I need to just sleep this off. Unbelievable. I turned him down when I could have really used his company.

I completely understand. Please get some rest and I will be up for a while if you change your mind. I'm out with some friends right now.

I heard both yelling and laughing in the background, so there was no way I was going to distract him from whatever was going on.

Thank you so much. I’ll talk to you later, Goodnight.

Trudging into the bathroom, I started to remove my makeup and reality hit me about earlier. Tears rolled down my cheeks once again as I finished getting ready for bed. There was a sudden banging on my door. What the hell was going on tonight? Was I ever going to be able to relax?

I marched toward the foyer, opening the door, only to be greeted by my close friend, Lily. She was a feisty, sunflower-blonde, with the bluest eyes anyone had ever seen. Whenever I was bothered, I could always count on her to read my mind. She always showed up with a bottle of wine and ten different ways to make me laugh.

She was a good person and if she ever found out about me, she would have walked away. I felt bad lying to her of all people. She did not deserve it. She was so loyal to everyone she associated with, but she was a decent human with a true heart. She did not stand for dishonestly. Integrity was important to her.
