“That would be a plot twist, wouldn’t it?” I snorted. You little shit!

Marco threw his head back, hooting. “Oh, God. I love how this is going! He’s so fucking dumb and clueless. He probably has no idea it’s me!” His wide grin disappeared. “I’m going to enjoy watching him die.”

“I suppose it won't be long before he figures things out, though.” I should not have said it, but I wanted to taunt him just a bit. It was a risky statement, but he would not hurt me. He needed me. I was a trophy to him. He wanted his father to see I was working for him. “Your father is a smart man, you know that.”

Abruptly, he froze, glaring. “Fuck him and fuck you! The minute the money transaction is completed, I’ll be on my way to Bora Bora.”

“And what about the girl?” I stood, cocking my head.

“I changed my mind about the sedative.” Nodding his head toward my gun holster, he smirked. “Shoot her now. I decided she can fuck off.” His lips twisted into a large, evil grin. “Kill her now, but make it painless as possible.”

“What?!” I darted my eyes back and forth, making sure I heard him correctly. “Right now?”

“He shoved me backwards, against the pool table. “Kill her!”

Fuming, I marched out of the room and up the stairs. I paused just outside her room, gulping. The time had come. Hoping I was prepared, I opened the door, seeing she was slouched over the edge of the bed. I had lied to Marco.

She was not sedated any longer. She was just groggy. Hanging on to the mattress, she clutched her abdomen with her other hand, attempting to take deep breaths. Gently closing the door behind me, I locked it.

“I laid clothes in the bathroom last night.” I slipped my hands in my pockets, leaning on the wall. “Put them on.”

“Please don't hurt me.” She mustered all the strength to stand, still slouched. “I can give you money as soon as I get back to the states! My real boss—”

“Hurry and get dressed.” I sighed, pressing my fingertips to my temples. “I need to get you out of here.”

“The last person I trusted—”

“I know.” I lifted my chin to the bathroom. “Get dressed. We have to go immediately. If you need help let me know.”

“Um, I got it.” She hobbled to the bathroom, closing the door until there was nothing but a small crack for an opening.

“Of course, it's all black.” She complained then mumbled the entire time she got ready.

With my back turned, I checked my watch and phone, making sure there was plenty of time for escape. Time was running out. I marched to the window, yanking back the curtain, checking for any activity below.

“Please hurry. We’re running out of time.”

Pulling my phone from my pocket, I dialed my point of contact.

Hello?

I have a delivery for you.

What?

I have the girl who belongs to Rovati. Meet us at the temple in fifty-three minutes. Marco isn’t with me. You need to hurry.

How do I know you're not lying? He was suspicious and rightfully so.

I glanced back over my shoulder to see she had emerged. I hung up hastily.

“Jane, I need you to be strong and walk.”

It was clear she did not trust me. I was the man who showed up at the office for Giovanni, causing them to flee America. But, at this point, she had no choice but to trust me. If anything, I expected her to run the minute we were out of the building and find Giovanni herself.

“I can walk a little.” She grabbed her side, following me out, evading Marco. “I’ll try to keep up.”

Crouched behind a dumpster in the parking lot of Marco’s apartment building, I poked my head around the corner of the metal bin, searching for any sign of threat to the boss. Yes, my job was to protect him, but he was also the father of the girl I had fallen in love with.
