Just as I was about to leave, Trigger came jogging into the foyer, adjusting his earpiece. “Sorry, I was sleeping.”
Offering a single nod, I pulled opened the door, racing to the car I kept parked in front of the house for quick trips.
“Where are we going?”
“Jane’s”
“Your assistant?”
I did not reply as I slid into the driver’s seat. Trigger got into the SUV parked next to me. I sped out of the driveway, through Scarsdale to Jane’s Midtown apartment in the city. If I came to a red traffic light and there was no one around, I raced through it.
In record time, I was parked on the street in front of her building. Trigger and I stepped out our vehicles concurrently. I tossed my keys to him as I marched toward the entrance.
“Take care of the car.”
The elevator seemed to move in slow motion. A man appearing in his mid-twenties stepped on just before me. Taking several breaths, I tried to relax. He, however, stared at me.
“You’re Giovanni Rovati.”
Gnawing the inside of my cheek, I reached over, pressing the next floor’s button. The moment the doors opened, I shooed him out into the hallway, scowling. “Get out. Get the fuck out now.”
“But this isn’t my floor.”
Dramatic? Maybe, but I did not want him to know where I was going. In my world, you could never be too careful. For all I knew, he was a spy for a rival family. There was no way he knew which floor I was going to. I made sure to push a different button. After I got out, I pushed every single one.
My eyes darted back and forth, searching for the correct apartment.Twenty-four, twenty-six, twenty-eight. Ah, thirty.
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!
The door opened sluggishly. “Hi.”
“Show me.” I did not bother with pleasantries as I barged passed her into the open concept living space.
“Okayyy, hi.”
I spun around as she closed the door. Taking my jacket off, I draped it over a dining chair, stalking her every move. She waltz passed me to the couch, plunking down.
“You are welcome to sit.” She patted the cushion next her as she picked up a laptop off the coffee table, balancing it on her thighs.
Striding over, I took a seat beside her, warily observing her click through various tabs on the screen.
“See when this transfer happened? And then again here? Why would they move funds that large, so close together?” She ran her fingernail under the lines of the large figures on the display. “Why Serbia?”
“Don’t worry about that.” I ran my fingers through my hair, lunging off the sofa, pacing the living room. “This is exactly what I was afraid of.” It suddenly occurred to me that she would have to be severely skilled or accidentally digging very deep in order to uncover such private information. I had not even uncovered that yet and neither had my brothers.
“Jane, where did you find this?”
“You gave me a stack of papers and I logged into the company platform from my laptop and then I opened this and scrolled all the way down to here.” She pointed to a tab with a lock on it.
I took a step over, glancing at what she was showing me. Lifting my hand to my chin, I stroked my jaw. “I don’t get how you would have found that. Luca has not even found it, yet.” He was a computer genius.
“I dunno, I just checked the document and combed through it, finding the password here.” She touched a series of letters and numbers. “I didn’t know it was the password at first, but then I thought I would try it after attempting others. I thought I was just doing my job.” Concern surfaced in her eyes. “I’m so freaking sorry.”
“Sorry?” I sighed. “I’m sorry Luca or I didn’t catch it before.” I sat on the couch once again.
She shrugged. “I don't even know whatitis.”
“It’s better that way, trust me.” Resting a hand on her shoulder, I inhaled deeply. “Well, you just saved my company from possible downfall which would have buried me.”
