The figure chuckled. “Mmm, a much closer guess.”
Oh fuck! Emilio. I opened my mouth to scream.
He lunged forward, clamping his hand over my mouth and nose. Struggling to breathe, I flailed my arms around. He leaned so close to my face, if his hand was not in the way, we would have been kissing.
“Sh, sh sh, don’t scream, Jane. We have a lot to talk about and we don’t have long. Giovanni is on his way.” He uncovered my nose, but kept his hand pressed against my mouth.
I nodded. My eyes filled with pools of panicked tears.
Pushing off my lips, he crossed his arms, towering over my bed, glaring down at me. “Do you know what this is,” he picked a folder up off the bed, shaking it. “or are you too groggy?”
“I’m p-pregnanttt.” I tried my best to buy some time and not fall back to sleep.
He shook his head, smirking. “Not anymore. My nephew is safe from you!” He took a step closer. “You know, you have quite a long history of shit going on.”
I shook my head. “P-please.”
“Please, what?”
“Letmelive.” I slurred my words.
“I promised you I would figure you out.” He hovered over me, holding his hand just above my face.
“Emilio, n-no.” I cried. I was horrified now. How did I think I would ever escape the mafia? I was so fucking stupid!
Bending closer, a malevolent grin inched on his face. He slipped on a pair of gloves before displaying a blade. He lifted my gown. “You will never. Hurt my family. Again.” Clamping a hand over my mouth and nose, he stabbed the blade into my surgical site, carving me open before jabbing his elbow into my freshly emptied stomach over and over again. His strength was unmatched. I could not hang on. The pain was unbearable. I tried to scream but could get no air. I tried to thrash, but could not free myse
“Where the fuck is she?!” I roared as Carmine and I rushed toward Lily.
With tears streaming down her cheek, she leapt into Carmine’s arms, sobbing. “She crashed after surgery in her room. They won't let me in.”
“Is she okay?!” I grabbed Lily, yanking her away from Carmine, shaking her by the shoulders. “Is our baby, okay?!”
“Gio,” she sighed, weeping, “I don't know yet, but we need—”
“I knew today would be—” My voice trailed off.
It was at that moment, I became one hundred percent aware I was only human. I realized in the past, I went intorobot mode, as my family called it. With Marco, I barely showed emotion. With work, I didn't show any emotion. This woman was carrying my child. My entire world was in her body. Our baby.
“Are you waiting for news about Jane?” A doctor ambled up, a solemn look etched on his face. It was evident, he was carrying in bad news.
“Tell me they're both okay!” I grabbed his white lab coat, thrashing him side to side.
“Sir, I need you to calm down.”
“DO NOT TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!”
Lily rested her hand on my arm. “Giovanni.”
Once again, aware of my surroundings, I sighed, letting him go. “I need to know.”
“There is no easy way to say this, Mr. Rovati.”
Oh no!
“Unfortunately, Jane did not make it, but you have a healthy baby boy who made it into the world just fine.”
Blankly, I stared ahead, unable to process the words that just came out of his mouth. Jane was dead? DEAD?! Guilt overwhelmed me as I struggled to accept we had no chance at a future after the past months. However, I never wished death on her.
