“What the hell was that?” She huffed.
I shrugged. “I don't like him.”
“You don’t know him.” She crossed her arms, frowning.
Again, I shrugged. “Don’t need to.”
“Carmine—”
“We need to talk.”
“What's wrong?” Her mouth fell agape when she sensed the seriousness in my tone.
I took a deep, annoyed breath. “Apparently when we had sex, Giovanni heard us.” I averted my gaze. “Several people did.”
“Are you serious?” She gasped. “How and who?”
“At some point, I activated the mic of my earpiece.”
“Was I that loud?” She giggled, tucking her bottom lip between her teeth.
Arm snaking around her waist, I yanked her close, eliminating any gap between our bodies. “Yeah, I think even the neighbors needed a cigarette.”
“At least it was just a drunk mistake, right?” She snorted.
“Was it though?” I cocked my head, unexpectedly irritated at her declaration.
The sudden vibration on my leg redirected my attention. Taking a step back, I pulled my phone out, reading a text. Lily rested her hands on her hips, swaying slowly.
“I have to go.” I sighed, shoving my phone back in my pocket.
“What’s wrong?” She muttered cautiously.
I shook my head, taking her hand in mine. “We’ll talk later, okay?”
“Carmine—”
“Lily, I have to go.” I sighed, releasing her. As I hurried out of her office, I looked back over my shoulder. “I’m sorry.”
Marching down the hallway and through the lobby, I hurried to the parking garage, trying my best not to heighten suspicions. I had parked just outside the exit. Digging my phone out once again, I dialed Giovanni instantly.
Do you have news for me?
Boss, I heard from our informant. He found information on Jane's father.
Thank you. We will look over the info tonight. Get ready for our next move.
Great see you then.
I hid my phone away and unlocked my car. Just as I was getting ready to leave, the door to the building opened. Lily stepped out with wide eyes.
“Carmine, good you're still here.”
“I had to make a call.” I sighed. “Was about to leave. What are you doing?”
“I was just going to leave early and work on some designs at the house.” Running her fingers through her hair, she sighed. “I was going to ask you if you wanted to hang out, but you rushed away. Can we talk about what happened?”
“There's nothing to talk about.” I rolled my eyes, replaying her words in my head. “You just got out of a relationship, and it was just sex right?”
