Soil, leaves, and pebbles burst in the air and then fell down over everything in a rain of chaos.

I fanned away the dust in front of my face. “Azar, just—”

A hail of debris slammed into the windows, shattering glass and splintering the frame. The dust in the air sizzled and popped with the demon magic.

Just don’t let him kill you, before you talk to him.

“Azar.” I cleared my throat. “If you just let me explain—”

Another boom banged against the wall on my left. Chairs and vases crashed to the floor.

The hotel’s phone rang. No doubt security wondering what was going on.

I definitely won’t be able to stay here again.

Ring.

His voice sounded from the darkness in front of me. “You want to explain?”

“Yes.” I couldn’t see him. He must have been cloaking himself.

Ring.

Then, his voice came right next to me, whispering in my ear. “What is there to explain?”

I jumped to the opposite direction.

He’s too fast.

Terror quaked through me.

Ring.

I bared my fangs. “Azar, show yourself so I can explain.”

“I believe I understand enough.”

A large crack split the glass end table on my right and then it shattered into tiny sharp pieces.

Ring.

I guarded my face with my hands.

Snarling came from behind me.

I turned, but saw nothing, and rushed to the other side of the room.

Ring.

This time, his darkness swarmed in every direction in the room. “I think that all mysteries about you that I may need solved. . .can simply be discovered from cutting you open.”

Getting in a fighting stance, I frantically looked around me. “I-I think. . .that’s a horrible plan.”

All of the lights went off.

Ring.

I shrieked and tried to squint through the darkness.
