“I don't need your friendship.”

More laughter bubbled from his chest. “Adae must be holding something pretty important as collateral, since you’re forced to hunt demons to pay off your debt.”

You have no idea.

“You won't tell me, Fatou?”

“I won't.”

“Too bad.” And then in one swift moment, he pressed his soft lips to mine and pulled back before I could bite him.

Damn it.

I’d lost another opportunity to knock him out. This entire situation was hopeless.

I scanned the area around us. Humans continued to dance and stroll by.

How am I going to get away from him?

I thought of the needles full of my venom and my dagger that I had in my garter belt. They were only for emergencies, since it took me hours to extract the venom from my fangs and even more time to put the venomous liquid into the small glass needles.

Well, this is definitely an emergency.

Hoping he couldn’t see my hand move, I lowered my hands and slowly pulled up the bottom of my dress, exposing the garter belt on my thigh.

His nostrils flared and he targeted my eyes.

You can do it, Fatou.

I quickly snatched a needle from the garter belt.

He smacked my hand away, making the needle fly past his arm. His eyes followed it as it twisted in the air and dropped to the ground.

“Very interesting.” He shook his head and stomped on it. The glass needle cracked. Milky white venom spilled onto the floor.

“Once again. You’ve come closer to getting me than any other hunter.” He ripped the garter belt from my thigh, held it to the side, and shook it.

Other needles fell, cracking as they crashed into the floor. Venom seeped out of them, pooling around his boots.

His nostrils flared. “Even your poison is deliciously intoxicating.”

“Perhaps, you should taste it too.”

He sniffed again. “Your venom's fragrance is nothing like I've ever smelled in this world. And I've smelled many things.”

Instead of dropping the garter belt onto the floor, he stuffed my garter belt into his pocket. “Because you’re so intriguing, I will let you live.”

My nerves calmed.

“Goodnight, sweet Fatou.” Azar disappeared right before my eyes.

The bubble left too.

Fast, I yanked my dress's top up and raced away, hoping to God that Azar didn't follow.

Now, what will I do?
