Gabe simply nodded. “You will. When we’re done here, I’m sending you after him. What he doesn’t know is he’s tagged. But there’s something else. I called to give you information. I didn't want Kaya hearing any of it. I had to get approval to share this with you."
Fuck, what now? "Okay, what is it?"
"Kaya's mother was a Rogues agent. Code name Dove."
My gut knotted.
C’mon, like you didn’t know? Like you didn’t sense it?
"Are you fucking kidding me?" I shoved off the door. "The last time we discussed her, you didn't think it was important to tell me?"
Gabe crossed his arms. "Back to your position, soldier. It was need to know until I had approval from Oversight to tell you."
Fuck. "What happened to her?"
"That's the thing. In five years, we haven't seen hide nor hair of her. She just vanished off the grid. We knew about the girl. She was undercover when she had the baby. We kept tabs on her. She was part of my mother’s class at Rogues. A class called Ravens. When my parents were gone and I took over as acting operations director, I was briefed on all past missions and agents.
“How long has Oversight known about Kaya?”
He sighed. “She popped on facial recognition the night of the charity auction. Oversight thought it was her mother at first which was why they wanted her protected.”
“Don’t bullshit me. They wanted her watched. A field agent in the wind for that long? Loyalty will be called into question.”
“And you’re right. The prints on your tuxedo buttons we dusted told us it wasn’t her. But she still needed protection.”
“Monitoring,” I corrected. “Fuck. When I went into this marriage you should have told me.”
“I asked if you were sure, Saint.”
He had. And when I thought about it, I knew I wouldn’t have done anything differently.
Gabe continued. “This past weekend, her mother’s printshowed up ina stash house in Zagreb. She took out a few men. She wiped the place down good, but we got a partial fingerprint off one of the men’s glasses. It looked like she stabbed him in the eye."
I cursed under my breath. "Wewere in Zagreb."
"Yes, I read the report. My guess is the men were tailing Kaya and she took them out."
I whistled low. "Christ."
"From Rook’s report, I see that you ran into them here outside the city." Gabe clicked something on his desk and a map of the city pulled up on a massive digital screen, highlighting where we'd been when we managed to cut off the men following Kaya.
"Do we have cameras on where they went after that?"
Gabe nodded and showed me the route. "This is where we tracked them. They must have tried to double-back to find Kaya and her friend again, but they couldn't so they just returned to their stash house. It appears Kaya’s mother was following them and keeping an eye on Kaya."
I frowned. "But why wouldn't her mother just reach out to her?"
"My guess is she knows exactly how dangerous it is."
"Why didn’t you call her in?"
Gabe sighed. "We haven’t had contact with her in years. She’s been dark. Croatia was the first time we’ve gotten a blip in five years."
"You could have gotten Kaya killed. You should have told me."
"I’m aware. Oversight would have absolutely loved bringing her in and using Kaya to bargain, but I never told them. That was my call to keep her off their radar. But it’s too late for that now."
I crossed my arms and cursed. Who the fuck were the people I was working for? "Why do you think she vanished?"
