She blinked at me owlishly. "What?"
"The contract is not important."
"Right. It’s just my life."
"Well, there's no point in having a contract if you can't be honest with me."
She lifted her gaze. "What?"
"So from what store did you pick that charm up?"
With her tawny skin, it was hard to tell when she paled, but she got the general gist. Eyes going wide, jaw going slack, looking a little like she might faint. "You know?"
"Of course I know."
I leaned back, crossing my legs at the ankles. "As a matter of fact, I chased after you."
"Jasper, I should have told you. Please forgive me."
"Youshouldhave told me." I picked up one of the highlighters she'd been using and twirled it around my fingers, twisting around and around. "You lied to me. You're not a prisoner here, Kaya. I'm trying to help you. I'm trying to keep you safe."
"I know. Look, I should have said something. I just… We weren't going to be gone that long, and I just wanted to chase down a lead."
"By yourself?"
"No, Gemma was with me."
"So you lied to me like I'm your parent?" I scowled at her. "Do you understand something could have happened to you?"
"Nothing did, and we're fine. How did you know we were gone?"
"I went to see you. I wanted to take you to brunch, but guess who wasn't where she was supposed to be? Imagine how that made me feel." I let my rage simmer just under my skin.
"I'm sorry." She inched back.
I frowned at her movement. She looked frightened. I forced a more measured voice. "I am trying to keep you safe."
"I know. I will be more communicative, but you and I barely know each other, and it's tense. I don't know how to do this."
I leaned forward. I watched the base of her throat and the rise and fall of her chest. "I have an idea. Why don't we go to dinner tomorrow night?"
"Yeah, sure. Um, except, I can't do it tomorrow."
I frowned. As I leaned closer, her breathing became shallower. I could feel the puffs on my cheeks as I leaned forward with only a few inches separating us. "Why can’t you go to dinner tomorrow?"
She swallowed hard. "I, um, I'm going out."
"Who with?"
"Westin. He asked me to dinner, and I said yes."
I was going to fucking kill him.
She had a bloody date.A goddamn date with fucking Rook. That piece of shit. He knew how important this was to make everything look real, but he was going to take her out? My fiancée. Just what the fuck was he playing at?
I was going to put a hole through his face.
Tuesday was a Rogues day for me. Standard training, ops review, and breakdown. As we suited up, Lachlan slid me a glance. "All right?"
