Chapter 17
One week later
Kristi
“Is something wrong?” I ask Bryce. We’re on our way to visit my dad, but since he picked me up this morning he’s been acting weird.
“Do you mind if I drop you off at your dad’s and come back a little later? There is something I really have to do first, and if I don’t do it right away, I won’t have the courage to do it later.”
“Um sure, can I ask what that would be?” I ask trying to get a little more information out of him.
“I need to talk to my brother. A real talk, about our mom, mostly.” We’ve talked about his issues with his mom and Vinny. Knowing he’s finally going to sit down with his little brother has me feeling happy. Maybe they will finally have a relationship.
“I’m glad you’re going to talk to him, it will be good for you. Just come to me when you’re done, or hell, stay and get drunk with him, we can just see each other tomorrow.”
He laughs and gives my hand a squeeze.
Thirty minutes later, we pull into my dad’s driveway and I get out, taking my bag with me. Giving Bryce a quick kiss through the driver’s side window I remind him, “Text me later to let me know, so I don’t have to worry if you’re coming back or not.”
“I will,” he says, giving me another kiss and pulls away. Before I get to the front door it opens and my dad comes out.
“Missed you, kid!” I laugh as he picks me up and spins me.
“I visit and call you all the time,” I say once he puts me down.
“Still, it’s not enough, I miss you now that you don’t live with me.” He grabs my bag and we walk into the house. “Emma isn’t here. She decided to go to the cabin with that new boyfriend of hers.” He grumbles, not sounding happy about it.
“That shithead, she promised she’d be here this weekend.”
“Yeah, I know, but when she found out the cabin was free for the weekend, she said she couldn’t pass it up.” We have a cabin near the mountains that Dad rents out, and when it isn’t being used, we usually take that as a chance for a getaway. I haven’t been there in years though.
“I wanted to tell her no, but she’s nineteen now, can’t really control her. I made sure to give her a box of condoms, though.”
I laugh. “She’ll be smart and safe, don’t worry about it. Gotta let us fly, Daddy.”
“Where’s this boy of yours?”
We sit on the couch after grabbing a few beers. “He needed to talk with his brother, so he just dropped me off. If this talk goes well, he might not be here tonight, but you’ll get to meet him tomorrow.”
We talk until we have nothing left to talk about, telling him about school, my new friend, Alana, filling him in on Ava’s life these days. Just before we place an order for pizza, I get a text, letting me know Bryce will be staying with his brother tonight and I smile.
The talk must have gone well.
After we eat and watch a movie, I notice the time, eleven, I start yawning. “Why don’t you head on up to your room and get some sleep. I’ll make you bacon for breakfast tomorrow.”
I grin. “Sounds good. Night, Dad, love you.” I say as I head up the stairs and quickly fall asleep the second my head hits the pillow.

I pull into the clubhouse’s parking lot and take a good look around. They really revamped everything, wow. The main building still looks like a warehouse, but I notice a huge fenced-in playground area off to the side, and further back are mobile homes with their own fence around them.
Getting out of my car, I walk over to the playground area, and see Vinny sitting on a picnic table smoking, fidgeting with his beanie, like usual.
“Hey, man,” he calls as he sees me come close.
I lift my chin in response and sit across from him on the other side.
“Gotta say, I was shocked you wanted to meet up. Didn’t think it was something you’d ever wanna do willingly.”
