“What the hell am I going to do?” Irritation floods through me as I drum my fingers anxiously on the steering wheel, trying to make a decision about what to do next. I know I have to do something. I can’t just sit here like an idiot.
I also don’t want to go home and tell my mom that I failed, all because of that family.
Again.
I suck in a sharp, shaky breath, trying to calm myself down so that I can actually make some kind of rational decision. Because whatever I do next is important.
Vital, in fact.
If I don’t do this job interview, then I will be a coward. It’ll be a bad start in what might be a long and painful job hunt. But if I do, then I might have to see one ofthem.
“Just… just do it,” I tell myself gripping the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turn white. “Get it over and done with. Be brave, use it as practice.”
It’s only the idea that I probably won’t have to see Wyatt himself that gets me going, and hauls me out of my seat, because it’ll be way too humiliating to see him again after what happened.
After all, he is the one person who knows everything…
I think back to that awful conversation.
“Huh, what did you say?”he had asked me as I stood anxiously in front of him, twisting my hands around.“I didn’t hear you, it’s really loud in here.”
I knew a bar wasn’t the best place to talk to him, but I couldn’t find any of the other Macauley brothers, and I needed someone to know, someone to pass on the message for me.
“Er, yeah well I would like to go somewhere a little quieter, but…”I could tell I wasn’t going to be able to make that happen. Wyatt wasn’t going anywhere.
“But just before Josh went to London, we had a night together.”Heat burned in my cheeks, although I wasn’t sure what I had to be so embarrassed about. I wasn’t the first person to have a one-night stand, especially not on graduation night, and I was sure I wouldn’t be the last.“We had sex, and since he’s the only person I ever slept with, well…
He didn’t get it though, and that was a big issue. I didn’t know how to explain myself properly and he didn’t understand it. It was officially one of the worst, most embarrassing encounters that I’d ever experienced in my whole life. I knew I still had my parents to tell at the time, but I couldn’t imagine that going as badly as this was.
“Josh is in London, right?”Wyatt drawled, barely even acknowledging me.“He left, so I’m afraid if he didn’t give you his number then he doesn’t want you to contact him.”
I had sighed heavily, the weight of the words really pressing down on me. The pain was the worst thing that I had ever experienced at the time.
“I know he didn’t leave me his phone number. We weren’t exactly close or anything…”
“So, I think you need to let him go then. I don’t think there is anything to talk about.”
“I just need to get some information to him, that’s all.”
Thank God I thought to write a letter. Smartest thing I might have done. I pulled it out of my pocket and handed it to Wyatt. I didn’t feel confident putting the letter into this guy’s hand, but what else could I do? I didn’t know any of the Macauley brothers at all, and they were allveryintimidating.
If I didn’t do this now, then I knew I never would.“Can you please just pass this letter on to him?”
“Is this some love note? Because I don’t know if I want to get in the middle of that…”
“It’s something he needs to know. That’s all.”
Wyatt finally nodded, and that was the last time we ever spoke. I can only assume that he had passed the note on to Josh, who had clearly not wanted anything to do with me and the baby. I mean, I get it I suppose.
I was nothing more than a one-night stand to him at the time, so why would he go out of his way to care? He had his life planned in London and didn’t want to be forced back to Beaufort because of someone he slept with once on a whim.
Truth be told it still hurts.
Not just the rejection of me, but of Mya. That poor girl doesn’t deserve to be rejected by anyone. But then he is the one missing out, isn’t he?
Having to interview at Wyatt’s company definitely wasn’t ideal, but I knew I was going to have to walk in there, to give myself the best chance because it’s not like I had dozens of job offers lined up. If I don’t try I will always regret it. I’ll always wonder what it could have been like. IknowI probably won’t get it because I won’t fit in, but I have to try.
I can’t allow the choices that someone else has made affect me. Wyatt acted a certain way years ago, but I didn’t need him to step up to the mark. Josh made his choice and that was the end of it. Now I just needed to make sure I could get this job, so I can support me and Mya for real. She is the only person I need to care about in this, she is most important
