I don’t know how the hell I’m going to get through the rest of the day just waiting to hear from him. I really don’t think I can cope. This is kind of a God damn nightmare…
* * *
“Are you okay, Lexi?” Mom asks as she slides my plate of half eaten dinner away from me. “You’ve been very quiet this evening. Are you a little hung over still?”
It takes me a couple of seconds to work out what she’s talking about. Of course, my lie that I went out with friends. Shit, I don’t want the truth to come out yet.
No way.
“Err, yeah something like that. But I will be just fine…”
“Sure, sure. Get an early night tonight. You’ll be better in the morning.”
Hmm, I hope she’s right. I really need her to be right, but I don’t think I’ll be good until I get an answer from Josh. I’m so on edge it sucks. I can’t believe how foolish I’m acting over Josh, it isn’t right.
It isn’t fair. My God, does he know what he’s doing to me?
“Do you need me to do anything?” Mom leans down and kisses me on the forehead. “Mya can always sleep here again if you aren’t feeling up to it?”
I shake my head no. If I don’t have Mya to care for then I will definitely drive myself crazy. I might even end up going over to Josh’s parent’s home to find out what the hell is going on. See him face to face to sort shit out.
Yeah, like a real crazy person.
“I’m fine. Thanks though, Mom.”
I rise up and bring Mya with me. She’s keen to get back home anyway and back to her own bed where she can rest properly. I know she loves sleeping at her grandparent’s home, but there is nothing quite like sleeping in her own bed, I get it.
I need to be with her anyway, to remind myself of what’s important in life.Sheis what’s important in life. She is what I need to focus on. If Josh rejects us again, then we will be back to having only one another.
I can’t stop myself from being a good Mom.
I am on auto pilot though, for the rest of the evening. Me and Mya go through our usual routine of bath time and bedtime, and I get her off to sleep. Honestly, much as I want to, I don’t feel even a tiny bit better afterward. I’m still as much of a mess. This radio silence might well be the thing that tips me over the edge into madness.
But what can I do? I’ve called him, I’ve messaged him.
If he doesn’t want to talk to me, if he prefers to just ghost me and leave it where it is, then fuck him… but I know I can’t just accept that. I need some real answers from him. I need to hear it from his mouth. Only then will I be able to accept it properly and be done with the whole thing.
Only then.
I let time pass, trying to focus on the TV show I’m watching, trying not to keep looking at my cell phone every five minutes, but I don’t succeed. The need to know what the hell is happening increases by the minute until the anxiety is pretty much all of me.
I think it’s this anxiety that causes me to do something that I know is drastic and probably stupid. But I just can’t help myself.
I hit the call button before I can even think to talk myself out of it.
Ring, ring… Ring, ring… Ring, ring…
I practically chew my fingernails down to the bone as I wait for him to pick up, then I almost hang up a million times.
But I don’t. Insanity keeps the phone up by my ear until I hear his voice.
“Hello, Lexi?”
“Hey Wyatt,” Ice cold shame washes over me. “Err, I know this is a little weird, but I was just wondering…” I cringe before I continue. What the hell have I become? At least Wyatt knows the truth about everything, so he might be a bit more understanding. “Where is Josh?”
I sink to the floor, dying inside as I wait for him to reply. I don’t know what answer I’m going to get, but I’m not expecting it to knock the air right out of my lungs.
“He didn’t tell you? He’s in New York. Got some meeting with a big shot that he’s been trying to get in touch with ever since he’s been here. Should be a good opportunity for him.”
