The new Italian restaurant that Wyatt went to for lunch seems like the best option to me. It’s new, so Lexi hasn’t been there before and neither have I, and it looks super classy. I’m excited
So excited that apparently, I’m early. Not that I mind waiting. Lexi doesn’t take long anyway, and the moment I spot her. I’m blown away. I know she’s gorgeous, but in that figure-hugging black dress she is something else. The material clings to her curves showing off her gorgeous body. She’s definitely, by far the most stunning woman I know.
“Whoa,” I gasp once she’s within earshot. “You look…”
I don’t quite have the words to vocalize how I feel, but that doesn’t seem to matter. She blushes and giggles, before returning the compliment.
“Yeah, you don’t look too bad yourself.”
I probably push my luck a bit by reaching out to take her hand, but thankfully she lets me. I notice a little shudder in her grip, but since I’m trembling with anticipation too, it feels good to match.
The music inside is perfect, as is the ambiance set by the candle lights flickering. I can’t stop the excitement from building up in my chest. Tonight, is going to be just perfect. Judging by the elated smile on Lexi’s face, she feels the same way too. We take our seats and pick up the menu, a sizzling energy burning between us both.
See? If Wyatt could see me now, he would understand why New York’s taken a back seat. How can it not when I am in heaven?
* * *
Dinner is amazing, seriously incredible, and I don’t just mean the food. Although it’s safe to say that was wonderful too. But it’s really just being around Lexi. She’s even better than I thought she would be. We get along better than I could ever have hoped. It makes me wonder how different things would have been if I’d noticed the connection on graduation night.
After all that talking, teasing, and laughing, she’s the one who reaches out to take my hand as we walk back to her place.
I might not have any experience with real dating and feelings, but this feels pretty good to me. I can’t read Lexi’s mind, but she looks over the moon as well. The wine helped loosen our tongues and it’s been amazing ever since.
“So, this is where you live, huh?” I ask as she pulls out some keys. “Cute.”
“It’s alright.” She shrugs nonchalantly. “It’s the guest house of my parent’s place, so okay for now. Not forever.”
It’s nice to know I’m not the only person without my forever plan fully laid out in front of me. I definitely thought that I would be further along by now than I actually am, but that’s okay. Nothing feels like an issue while I’m here with her.
The door unlocks and we head inside. Immediately I’m hit with a warm, homey feeling. This is definitely the house of a wonderful mother. Knowing Lexi has a child and being in her environment are two very different things. I try peeling back that layer of her life.
“So, this is her, huh?” I ask as I pick up a photo of Lexi’s daughter. I have seen a picture of her online, but this is better. “She looks like you.”
Lexi’s eyes soften as she smiles at the picture. It couldn’t be clearer how much she loves her child. “Mya, yes she’s very cute.”
“I bet she’s just like you as well.”
“She can be.” The look that Lexi gives me next is a very pointed one. “If you’re not planning to run off to New York any time soon, maybe you can meet her? If you want to, that is.”
Whoa. Her wanting me to meet her child, and be involved in her family is a huge step. That shows me she’s definitely in the same mindset as me. We might not know what this is at the moment, but obviously we can’t wait to find out.
“I would love that,” I reassure her with a smile. “Whenever you think the moment is right, that sounds incredible.”
Lexi laughs, but it’s not a sound flooded with mirth, it’s more like she can’t believe how well things are going. My God, same.
“Well, I’m sure she’s being a very good girl for my mom at the moment, and sleeping well.” She crosses her fingers and laughs again. “So, we definitely have the rest of the night just us, if you want another drink?”
I nod eagerly. It doesn’t matter how late it is I amnotready for this night to end any time soon. I’m just having the best time. I follow Lexi into her adorable little kitchen and watch as she pours us both more wine.
When I came back to America, Beaufort wasn’t even a possibility. I didn’t even consider it an option. I actually fought against Dad's idea when he mentioned it, but now honestly anything is possible.
Lexi seems even brighter as she raises her glass to mine, and we clink it together in a cheers gesture. I must have made her happy by saying the right things. But I wasn’t just talking to please her, I really do feel that way.
“Shall I put some music on?”
The first song that blasts out of Lexi’s music box is a wonderfully loud edition of a childhood nursery I vaguely recall from my youth. It could have been a very embarrassing, mood killing moment, but we both crease over with laughter.
“That’s what classifies as cool now,” Lexi declares with her chin jutted out. “You’re just missing out because you’re past it.”
