“Why not?” He furrows his brows, looking hurt, like he wasn’t expecting this reaction at all. Is he so used to always getting what he wants that he can’t accept this rejection now?
I snatch my arm away, feeling even angrier.
“Because I don’t want to go on a date with you, Josh. And some of us can’t just drop everything and go out whenever we want. Some of us have responsibilities, you must understand that right? I can’t justgo out. I don’t have that freedom.”
That really is the truth as well, because there is no chance in hell that Mom and Dad will look after Mya so that I can go out withJosh.
They hate him for what he’s done to me. Rightfully so.
I stare at him, full of rage. I might be about to explode, but I’m giving him a chance to process my words and to respond however he sees fit. But he doesn’t say anything at all. He opens and closes his mouth a couple of times, but absolutely nothing comes out.
Well, fuck that. That’s evidence he doesn’t want to talk about Mya, and that he never will. I just went against all my promises to myself and opened the door for the conversation, but he didn’t pick it up. Obviously, he has nothing to say about his daughter, which is insane.
Why come after me in such a heavy way if he doesn’t want anything to do with Mya?
Urgh, what an asshole. I really do hate him.
I wriggle out of his grasp and angle myself away from him, heading back to my desk with frustrated tears pouring down my face. I wipe them away, so Josh doesn’t see. The last thing I want is for him to know that he’s gotten to me.
An asshole like him, I shouldn’t let him get to me like that.
I shouldn’t let him anywhere near me.
Never again, that’s for sure. Once he walks out of here, I will never let him near me again. I’m just grateful now that no one caught us so we won’t have consequences this time around. I’m still dealing with the consequences from the last time. I don’t need more.
I take a seat and furiously begin typing random words on my computer as I sense him walking into the room. I’m not even working on anything, but he doesn’t need to know that. He just needs to take this as a hint not to bother me again.
Me and him aredone.
As far as I’m concerned, the sooner he goes to New York, the better it will be for all of us.
ChapterThirteen
JOSH
“Is everything…?” I start to ask, because I can’t understand why Lexi suddenly snapped and changed like that. One minute we were having a good time, a great time actually, and then… well then she just kinda freaked out, and I don’t know what I did wrong.
“I have things to do,” she snaps back, not even letting me finish my question. “I think it’s best for you to just leave now, unless you want to answer Wyatt’s endless questions about what the hell you’re doing here again. Don’t you think he’s going to get suspicious?”
I don’t think Wyatt would mind. Not if he knew that I actually liked Lexi and really do want to go on a date with her. I guess I shouldn’t have been so forceful about it. I got caught up in the moment, and wanted to keep this going. But that was insensitive because she does have responsibilities. I know she has a kid, so I need to keep that in mind.
She’s not going to be carefree like me, she can’t.
She has another life to think about. How can I make her see that we can have fun on a date? It doesn’t need to be a big deal, I just want to spend more time with her. She means more to me than sex. Yeah, we have great chemistry, but I really like her company as well.
She makes me feel like a carefree teen once more, and I think I make her feel the same way. But Lexi has to be more aware of real life than me. I can respect that, and I will. I have to.
I part my lips, about to tell her as much, but then the awful dinging sound ricochets through the building.
Wyatt is back, and there is nothing I can do.
“Aww, Josh, are you here for food?” Wyatt chuckles. “We ate in this time, so I don’t have anything for you. I’m sure Mom will cook for you if you ask her…?”
I force a smile on my face because I don’t want Wyatt to know that anything is going on. Not if Lexi is being so cold with me. I need to get out of here and quick.
“I just came to see if I left my contact book here before, that’s all. But I don’t think I did, so I’ll get out of your way. Sorry about that, Wyatt.”
“You don’t want to come and talk to me? I have some time…”
