“Oh dear, you don’t want to work for me then? What a shame.”
This should drive him away, but it doesn’t. He seems to find all of this funny as he pulls his chair closer to mine. So close that the gravity seems to shift until it’s focused only on us. We have a strange orbit around us. I don’t want to keep my eyes locked on him, but I can’t stop. He seems to have some fix on me with that intense gaze of his.
Ineedto remember who he is, and how he left me. How he ignored my letter and didn’t want anything to do with my daughter. He hasn’t even mentioned Mya yet, which is crazy. How can he think that we’ll just keep talking, but not about her? I’m certainly not going to be the one to bring her up, he’s the one who needs to talk.
“Why wouldn’t you want to work for me? I could be your sexy boss…”
Oh God. This isn’t easy.
He’s basically turned me back into the teenage girl I once was, the one who was completely obsessed with him and would have done absolutely anything for him. Shit, I’m not supposed to be that girl anymore. I’m a mother, an adult, someone who’s so much smarter than teenage me, I shouldn’t be likethis.
“I don’t think you’re supposed to find your boss sexy,” I shoot back coldly. “I think it’s supposed to be a professional relationship. You know, no funny business.”
Again, he tosses his head back and laughs, like I’m joking. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe you shouldn’t be working for me. I don’t think we would get any work done. I would spend way too much time trying to see what sexy skirt you have on each day.”
I get a little breathless as it becomes painfully obvious that he’s flirting, really genuinely flirting with me. Not only is this highly inappropriate because I work for his brother, he has to remember that we aren’t just foolish teens who hooked up once.
We have consequences of that, and we shouldn’t ever act like that isn’t the case.
I part my lips, trying to retort something witty that might actually make him back off, but nothing comes out. I don’t have any words because unfortunately I’m stuck in his eyes.
“You’ve always been a real cutie,” Josh continues. Either can’t see my inner turmoil, or he’s getting a kick out of it. “The hottest chick in Beaufort.”
He tucks a stray strand of hair behind my ear, instantly taking me back tothatnight at the graduation party when he scooped me up into his arms because I got knocked over. He was my hero then, my childhood crush, and I got all caught up in that.
How the hell am I going to stop myself from getting all caught up in that again?
“I don’t think you should be here, Josh,” I say through gritted teeth. “I have to work.”
But of course, he completely ignores me. “And you have always had a crush on me, do you remember saying that to me? Because I haven’t forgotten.”
“You haven’t?” That shocks me, I think that’s why I respond in such a way. Because that was such a throwaway comment, I really didn’t think that’s something he would keep in his mind for all these years. I thought he would have forgotten all about it.
“No, of course not.”
Oh shit, now his hand is on my knee. Why is his hand on my knee? Why can’t I shake him off? I really need to get rid of him. “You made a real impression on me back then; I’ve thought about you a lot.”
I can’t stop my mind from spinning, from leaving my head completely. A shudder of electricity runs up my leg, surging through my body, claiming a piece of my heart. I don’t want to give anything of myself to him, but he’s claiming it, he’s taking it in that typical Josh Macauley way.
What the hell am I going to do?
ChapterNine
JOSH
Ooh I like making Lexi squirm, it’s hot as hell. Especially considering she’s trying to resist me so hard. I don’t knowwhyshe’s trying not to have fun with me and why she’s being so cold, but that only makes her more fun. She has walls up and I am determined to break them down.
“You got nothing to say to that?” I ask curiously as I slip my hands a little bit further up her thighs. I’m not going too far, I just want to see how much of herself she’s willing to give to me this morning. “Did I make any kind of impression on you?”
She rolls her eyes, but the redness stains her cheeks even further. I can almost see the shudder tearing down her spine. “I guess you made something of an impression on me.”
Hmm, cryptic, but that’s okay. Maybe she’s just being this way because we’re in her office and she’s trying to impress Wyatt.
Thank God he hired her. Hanging out with Lexi is one of the pluses in Beaufort, I don’t mind sticking around for this fun.
“I’d like to hear more about this impression.” She sucks in a sharp breath so I pause my hands where they are. There’s no way I want to take this too far.
This is a lot of fun as it is.
