I nod before she can fill in all the details. “Yeah. But it’s the only offer I’ve gotten, so I don’t exactly have any choice in the matter. And the pay is good…”
“Not good enough,” she glowers. Mom did try to convince me that I should chase Josh for payments for Mya when she was born, but I didn’t want to then, and I don’t want to now. If he doesn’t want to have anything to do with our daughter, then I don’t want his money.
I know his family can more than afford it, it was well known in town that his family came from old money, but I don’t want it. “Are you sure about this? Working there, I mean?”
I know she has my best interests at heart, but her words give me even more anxiety. I don’t like being questioned about this when I’m already feeling uncertain. But at this point I really don’t see what choice I have in the matter.
“I’m going to see what it’s like, then go from there,” I say. “I don’t know what other choice I have. There isn’t anyone else knocking down the door to get to me…”
Mom nods, but there’s a deep reservation there.
I hate this, her emotions mirror my own. The worry knotted in her eyebrows is enough to keep my mouth shut about Josh being back. I know I’ll need to tell them eventually because they are bound to find out soon enough. They might end up bumping in to him or something, which will be a real disaster. But for now, I don’t want there to be more pressure than there already is.
Besides, he might be gone by now anyway. With a bit of luck, I won’t have to worry about that man for the rest of my life.
“Anyway, me and Mya need to go now. It’s time for kindergarten.”
We say goodbye to my parents and head out to the car. Mya seems very excited about her first day of school which is great. It will be one less thing to worry about. She’s never had any issue making friends at any of the mom and baby groups I have gone to, so I’m sure she will be fine.
Thank God one of us will be, because my head is feeling scrambled at the moment…
Mya barely even has a moment to say goodbye to me as we get to the school gate. She is so thrilled to be around a bunch of children her own age that she runs inside rapidly.
I stay to wave and to watch her for a couple of moments, but she quickly joins in on a game with some of the other children, and I know she’s going to be just fine. I can’t hang around for too long, I need to face the inevitable. I need to get to work…
The drive is scary, much more terrifying than dropping off Mya, my heart is absolutely racing. I really need to find a way to make this work, at least for a little while. Because of the money, and the chance to really get my foot in the workplace. I’ve heard it’s easier to get a another job while already working, so fingers crossed that’s the truth.
“Okay,” I whisper to myself as I park the car outside my new office and try to reassure myself.
It’s going to be fine. Wyatt wants you; he has hired you for a reason. Just make it work.
Not the best pep talk possible, but it’ll do. It gets my sorry ass out of the car, and gets me walking towards the terrifying building in front of me. I hope this outfit is a little better, I’m in black leggings and a purple mid length dress which is professional looking, and fingers crossed a little cool as well. I don’t think I’ll ever be as edgy as the people who work here, but I can try. I just want to fit in enough. That’s all.
“Ah, Lexi, you’re here!” Wyatt sounds delighted as I edge my way in the door. It isn’t exactly the quiet entrance I wanted, but I suppose it’s okay. “Good to see you. Liss has been doing her best to manage the reception desk but she’s glad to have you here.”
“You have no idea.” Liss rolls her eyes. “I actually want to focus on the bike I’m working on. Because I need to thank you, I’m going to start your day off well. With a coffee and one of the pastries from the basket. Are you hungry?”
I nod, I didn’t have time for breakfast this morning. This is actually a pretty nice welcome. It stops my heart from racing at the speed of light, it even brings a bit of a smile to my face. Maybe I am going to be able to make this work after all.
At least for the short term.
ChapterSeven
JOSH
A weird bubble of emotion flows up in my throat. Strange, since I’m the one who’s been away for years, but watching Luke grab his backpack and knowing that he’s going to be gone for a while is a lot. It’s harder than I thought it was going to be.
Is this how my brothers felt when I was leaving? I can’t imagine it because we were all so much younger back then and it probably didn’t seem too bad, but if I did make any of them feel like this then I’m actually sorry for that.
God, what the hell is wrong with me? I’m normally not like this. Beaufort has brought out this emotional side of me that I don’t normally feel. I’m usually more rational and straightforward thinking.
I need to get the hell out of here and soon.
“You ready to go?” I wave my car keys at Luke. “Let’s get you to the airport before you miss your flight. That wouldn’t be a good way to start your trip.”
Luke beams ear to ear. I can almost see the sands of Thailand in his eyes already. I suppose this is going to be good for him, to find himself and figure out what he wants from life.
“Yeah, I’ve said all my goodbyes now. I’m good to go.”
