“Oh, my goodness, you willneverbelieve who I ran into today, at Wyatt’s office interviewing to be his receptionist.” Grayson stares at me expectantly, and I find myself almost bursting at the seams with excitement to tell him. “Lexi Brunson.”

Grayson’s lips turn down into a frown. “Who? Lexi Brunson? Who’s that? I don’t recall.”

I roll my eyes and laugh. “I’m sure she must have been in some of your high school classes. I can’t believe you don’t remember her, she’s beautiful. She always has been.”

She’s more gorgeous now, that much I’m sure of. I haven’t been able to get her off my mind ever since I laid eyes on her in Wyatt’s office, and he was no use to me. He didn’t give me any information about Lexi’s life now, it’s almost like he only asked her about work related things in the job interview. Why isn’t anyone as intrigued as me?

I guess because I slept with her, so we have a connection. We have a bond that I desperately want to explore again. I know she didn’t seem very warm when we chatted, but she was in a professional environment, trying to get a job wasn’t she? I can’t blame her for that.

At first I was worried that she hated me because of what happened five years ago. I thought she might have been mad that it only turned out to be a one-night stand, but she can’t be. Everyone knows that’s what graduation parties are for. To have fun and nothing more. It isn’t a night to start anything meaningful and long lasting.

Lexi’s no dummy, she knew that.

No I’m sure it was more of a shock than anything else to see me again. That’s why she was so cold.

“Did you date her, Josh? Back in high school.”

“I didn’t date her exactly, but we did have some good times.”

“Ah, so you’re looking for a second chance at love with her?” Grayson grins. “I didn’t know you were the romantic type. Back in Beaufort looking for love.”

I crease up with laughter. “Yeah, that really sounds like me, doesn’t it? A hopeless romantic going after my high school sweetheart. Looking for a happy ever after. Nah I just thought that she was looking smoking hot and that we could have some fun.”

“I don’t know,” Grayson warns. “You don’t want to fool around with someone like Lexi, you might end up in a horribly complex situation…”

“Why, we hooked up before.” I roll my eyes. “I don’t think that’s going to be a problem. We know where we stand with that sort of thing. |It’ll be easier to put down the barriers and make sure that we both know where we stand and everything…”

“No way,” Grayson scoffs. “In high school maybe, but not anymore. She’s an adult now.”

“Yeah, we both are.” I’m not really getting it. What does he mean?

“No, I mean she has adult responsibilities. She has a kid.”

Whoa.I have to admit that stops me in my tracks. I didn’t know anything about a child. Maybe that’s why she isn’t in LA or wherever, because she decided to stay in Beaufort to have a family instead. Wild, the difference in the choices that people make. I can’t even begin to imagine making that decision. At least in my late teens or early twenties.

Madness.

“I didn’t know that,” I murmur quietly, almost to myself.

“Yeah, she doesn’t have any social media accounts or anything like that. I just took a look now so I could try and remember her. But one of the other girls from high school posted a picture of her with her baby. Look.” He flashes his cell phone my way. “She’s a mommy.”

My heart skips a couple of beats.

This isn’t Lexi with a little baby, the child is about two years old, with the caption‘Look at my bestie with her baby girl. Can’t wait till they come visit!’.I don’t know why, but I have to admit this does change things a bit. I shouldn’t mess around with someone’s relationship. I might only have short term flings, but only ever with single people. That’s been my rule all along. I never want to wreck a home or relationship. And this would be extra bad because there is a child involved. A whole family. That I can’t do.

I guess that my few weeks of fun are out the window then. I shouldn’t be too cut up about it because it makes no difference in the grand scheme of things. It isn’t like I’m going to be here long enough to make an affair worthwhile.

“Huh, well, I didn’t know that.” I shrug and try to act like I’m not bothered. “Crazy how fast some people move their lives, isn’t it? I didn’t know anyone would be all loved up with babies and stuff now. It seems way too quick for me.”

“Same,” Grayson agrees, much to my relief. At least I’m not alone in my thoughts that settling down doesn’t need to be done right out of high school. Although the more I look at this photo with Lexi and her child, the harder my heart thumps. I guess with the person who’s right for you, it doesn’t matter.

There is no right time, or time too soon.

“She looks happy in that photo, don’t you think? Like she enjoys her life.”

I lean in a little closer as if I haven’t been studying her hard the whole time. She really does have the most stunning smile. And her daughter is adorable too. I just kinda wish that I’d known about her motherhood before I started acting like a horn dog in front of her.

She must think I’m a total idiot. That is something I’ll have to clear up next time I see her… somehow.
