My mouth runs dry. “Right, I see. Err, yeah thanks…”
I let the phone fall from my hand with no idea if my boss is still on the line, because it’s happened. It’s really happened. Josh has decided to reject me once more.
Mya too. He promised me the world and then left me high and dry.
My heart is fucking broken. I don’t know how I manage to keep the tears inside. I don’t know what stops me from weeping like a baby. I moved on the last time that Josh left me, because it was easy to do so. I had other things to focus on anyway, but this time I think it might be more difficult. I don’t know if I’m actually going to be able to handle it.
“Fuck.” I curl up tighter, get myself in the fetal position. Not knowing was one thing, but knowing is something so much worse.
“Fucking hell Josh, why?”
Why does he keep doing this? Why am I not good enough for him? Why is Mya not enough? I suppose the only silver lining to this thick black cloud, is that he didn’t meet Mya so she will never know.
Thank God because my poor girl doesnotdeserve to be treated like this.
No one does.
ChapterNineteen
JOSH
Brian Johnson is good. Really good. He clearly knows his shit.
If I were to move to New York, and work with him, then I could definitely make a success of my life. The more I listen to him, the more I can see that.
And this office, wow! That’s impressive all on its own. The view of Central Park from here is incredible. This is a self-made man who I’ve always wanted to connect with…
So why am I struggling to listen to him? Why is my mind elsewhere?
I keep trying to focus on Brian’s words, to really listen to him, but Lexi’s face keeps replacing his. All I can think about is her and everything that has happened between us.
I remember the person that she was in high school, a little younger than me but still someone I had noticed from afar because she was so cute. Ineverwould have guessed she had a crush on me at the time though. Maybe I would have asked her out on a date a lot sooner if I had known….
But then there wasthatnight, the night that I can only assume changed everything. The graduation party. I only happened to be back in town for that one night, when I found out about the party, and I only decided to go at the last minute because I was so bored at home.
Little did I know that a beautiful woman would fall at my feet and immediately catch my eye. If I hadn’t taken off for London so soon, then I definitely would have hung out with her a some more. We could have had a summer of romance and fun…
Although I suppose a surprise pregnancy might have kiboshed that somewhat.
What would have happened if I’d stayed in town and learned about Mya? Would I have been happy to know I was about to become a father even though I was so young? Or would I have been annoyed at losing out on London and my future? To miss out on the career I’ve always wanted? I honestly don’t know.
It’s hard for me to tell.
I would like to think that I would have been good about it, but who the hell knows?
It isn’t just about me though, is it? It’s not just my feelings about the pregnancy. I wonder what the hell Lexi went through when she found out that she was having a baby. It must have been really shocking for her, she was so young.
I swallow hard as it hits me how challenging it must have been for her to give up onherdreams, LA, school and everything else she had planned for herself. It doesn’t matter thatIwould have had to give up London, she actuallydidgive up LA.
Shit, I never really thought about that.
I twist my hands in my lap as I think about Lexi’s face when I first walked back into her life. She was more surprised than me and now I know why. Because she had been hiding her child from me. She didn’t know that I would ever come back.
She didn’t tell me right away though, did she? That’s something I will never be able to wrap my head around. Why didn’t she just say it then and there…?
Unless she thought I knew. My blood runs cold as I consider this possibility. She sent me a letter, didn’t she? I know it was in my bedroom, but what if Lexi didn’t know that? Oh God, now I’m starting to get really confused about everything.
“So, what do you think about my proposal, Josh?” Brian asks as he finishes his pitch. My attention snaps back into the room. “I’m very interested to hear your thoughts…”
