Wyatt hasn’t mentioned Mya. I didn’t think he would do so right away, but I figured it might come out later but it hasn’t, yet. But I still need to be prepared for when it does. He probably feels awkward because Josh didn’t want to know her ever, but really, he is biologically related to Mya as well. We can always maybe work something out.
It scares me. Anything involving the Macauley family is always going to terrify me when my daughter is involved, but considering Wyatt’s introduction is so much better than imagining bringing Josh into the picture. It’s just good that he’s probably gone…
A ding by the door indicates someone is coming inside. I snap into action immediately, trying to remember that I have to be professional. A customer won’t want to see me slouching by the coffee machine, daydreaming.
“I’m just coming!” I call out in a chipper tone. “I’m just over here, one second…”
The words fall apart on my lips, probably at the same moment as the color drains completely from my cheeks. Holy shit, he’s supposed to be gone. We aren’t supposed to be alone.
“Er…”
Shit, I fell vulnerable. As the color flows through me once more, I can just tell that I’m a bright red, burning hot color. I must look a mess. “What are you doing here?”
“Looking for Wyatt.” Josh smiles. The one that makes my stomach scrunch up. “Is he here? I was hoping to go to lunch with him if he’s free.”
I swallow hard before I can think about formulating a reply. “He’s just gone out with his team. To the Italian place just around the corner. I’m sure you can still catch him.”
I wait for him to leave but he doesn’t.
Why isn’t he going? Nerves zig zag through my body.
“He didn’t ask you to go to lunch with him as well? That isn’t fair.”
“Oh no, it isn’t like that at all. I’m waiting for some calls to come in…”
Oh, holy hell, why is Josh now walking over to my desk? This isnotgoing as planned. I might have to give him a hint that I don’t want him around. I head back to the coffee machine and pour myself a drink, resisting the natural urge to offer him one too, just to be polite.
It seems like I might have slipped too far into the customer services role. Josh doesn’t deserve me being nice and polite to him. Not until I work out his intentions anyway. He must want something because I don’t know why he’s hanging around otherwise.
“What are you doing?”
Oh my God. Just when I think this can’t get any worse, now hereallyhas me on edge. He’s taken a bite out of my slightly soggy sandwich and is still grinning at me like we’re going to be the best of friends.
This man has ignored my daughter for four long years. If that’s his choice then fine, it is what it is. But he can’t come here and torture me now.
“Just hungry, you know.” He laughs, even though he must be able to sense I’m not finding this funny. “Since Wyatt has already gone and everything.”
“There is nothing keeping you here then, is there? You know where he is.”
“Ooh, I don’t know about that. I don’t think I want to go anywhere.”
Great, so for some reason, he has decided to torture me. That is freaking wonderful. Just what I need. But I won’t let him defeat me. Not a chance in hell. I haven’t raised his child all by myself just for him to make me feel all weird.
I push past him and take my seat with my ice-cold exterior shoving him away. Not that it’s really working. If anything, I think I might have pulled him a little closer to me. What the fuck is this game? I donotwant to be playing it.
I sip my coffee and keep my eyes fixed on the computer screen. I don’t know if Josh can see the effect he’s having on me though, because my heart is absolutely thundering against my rib cage, my breath falls out of my mouth sharp and ragged, and my eyes are blurry.
I can’t see a damn thing. When will he get the hell out of here?
“So, how are things going, working for Wyatt?” Josh asks, settling into the seat beside me, acting like he isn’t going anywhere. “I bet he’s a pretty cool boss.”
“Uhuh.” I don’t intend to give him anything.
“Good, good. That’s good to know.” He chuckles. “Although I better not ask Wyatt what it’s like to have you working for him, because if you’re too good then I might have to steal you to work for my company. Now that could be a lot of fun, couldn’t it?”
I can’t help it. I snap my head around to stare at Josh in shock.
I can’t believe he just said that. Is this how he’s planning to help out with his child? By hiring me to work for him? Urgh, that makes me feel sick to my stomach. The horror must be showing on my face.
