Making things better for us. I know we like living in my parent’s guest house, but we can’t do that forever. Beaufort might be good for us now, but I don’t know if this is where I see us forever.

I sigh to myself, knowing that even if this isn’t something I do forever, I’m going to have to do it for now, I just can’t turn down that kinda money. I’ll never forgive myself.

“Yeah, I can make it there this morning. But I need to drop my daughter off to kindergarten first. It’s her first day and I know she wants me there with her…”

I brace myself for some kind of reaction, because surely, he’s remembered who I am now. Josh must have said something to him, they might have even discussed their biological relationship to my child. Wyatt might have something to say about it all…

But he doesn’t. He says nothing about Mya. “Sure! You do that and get in as soon as you can. Just knowing that you’re coming makes me feel better.”

This is weird, so weird. I hate not knowing where I stand with everything. I would rather Wyatt just address everything so we can get it out the way.

Josh too, but I suppose the Macauley brothers just don’t have it in them. So annoying.

But I need the money, so I’m going to have to accept that.

“Right, well, see you soon. Thanks, Wyatt.”

I’m still a little stunned as I hang up the phone. I don’t quite know what will happen next. This is a surprise. In a good way, of course, because I need the work and the money. But it’s a surprise in a shockingly bad way too. And to find out that I need to start right now is also a bit of a bummer. I don’t knowwhatI’m going to wear, and I barely feel like I have enough time to do anything.

This is a real pain in the ass.

I leap out of bed and hop into the shower, my pulse still pounding as I do. My head aches and my stomach flips over. IknowI need to calm down before dealing with anything. This was already going to be a big day, but now it’s even worse.

Now I have even more on my plate.

It’s almost enough to send me headfirst into a bubble of anxiety.

“You can do this,” I whisper to myself, to give me a little pep talk. “Youcan. Wyatt wouldn’t have hired you if he didn’t think you could do this. You know that, Lexi.”

But the words feel hollow, they aren’t doing anything to convince me that I’m going to make it through the day with my dignity intact…

“Mommy?” Okay, so now Mya is awake. It’s time to become ‘mom’ and to push all of this to the back of my mind. If I just take this one step at a time, then everything will be fine. It’ll be the first day of the rest of my life. Maybe Josh has even left town, I mean he isn’t exactly the type to stick around for a long time, is he?

Yeah, he’s probably somewhere else in the world already, flirting with anyone else but me, so it’s fine.

Fine for me, although I do feel quite bad for Mya. Not that she will ever know.

“Coming, sweetheart,” I call back. “Just give me a moment.”

I climb out of the shower, trying to convince myself that I’m far more clear headed and ready for action than I was when I got in. I don’t feel that way, I’m just as mixed up and confused as ever, but I have a lot to distract me.

I have to get Mya ready for the first day of a new era for her as well.

If I just focus on my daughter for now, then everything will be fine.

“You’re all dressed up.” Mom eyes me with surprise as I hurry Mya into their home, so I can fill them in on what’s going on. I know Wyatt has been super understanding about me needing to drop Mya off before I come into work, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to leave early enough to pick her up. “What’s going on today? You have somewhere you need to be?”

“Mommy got a job!” Mya exclaims excitedly on my behalf.

“You have? Which one., Lexi? That’s such great news.”

I feel guarded before I reply. Since my parents know everything, this might be a hard pill for them to swallow. And that’s just the part where I’m working with Wyatt.

“Well, I got a call back from the interview I went to. The one at the motorcycle store…”

Her lips turn down into a frown. “You mean…?”
