At the moment Chad had neither his marriage nor little hope for a promising career.

The plane lifted into the air.

The attendant announced the ability to use his phone. Fumbling for his device, he arranged for Wi-Fi and messaged Jordan.

The hospital said Heather’s in ICU.

Minutes dragged until Jordan responded.Hypovolemia. She lost too much blood during the surgery. Monitoring the baby.

Is he okay?

Stable.

You’re at the hospital?

Yes. Will see you later.

Heather and the baby had to pull through the surgery.

CHAPTER FORTY

HEATHER SLOWLY EMERGEDfrom a deep sleep. Twice before she’d attempted to surface but drifted back. From the low, rhythmic beeping around her, she must be hooked up to machines that recorded her vitals. Sleep urged her into a peaceful world. She forced her eyes to open, but dizziness spun, and she closed them again.

“Is my baby okay?” she whispered to anyone nearby.

“This is Jordan, and your baby’s fine. Strong heartbeat. It’s Mama who needs to regain her strength.”

Thank You.“My appendix is gone?”

“Forever. Because of potential infection, the surgeon chose not to remove it laparoscopically.”

“Life has hit me with a few challenges,” she said. “Am I in recovery?”

“ICU in the isolation section.”

She opened her eyes. “Why do I feel so weak?”

“Low blood pressure.”

She lifted her head to read her vitals, but the machine was turned, and the movement increased her queasiness. For the next few minutes, she pushed strength into her body until she felt strong enough to carry on a conversation. “How am I now?”

“You’ve made a little progress.”

“When can I leave?” she said.

“Are you missing the five-star amenities of Adam’s Island?”

“And to find who’s responsible for the virus.”

“Right now your mission is to get better. Qualified people are on the case.”

“Not on the island. Any updates?”

“Not since I last checked. Catherine sent her love, and so do Jackie and Ada.”

“Tatum? Maria?”

His eyes pooled. “Maria passed.”
